Lady Pioneers set single game assists record in 7-0 victory against Bluffton

MARIETTA, Ohio – A total team effort. That is what fans saw at Marietta Field Saturday (Sept. 24), when watching the Lady Pioneers soccer team defeated Bluffton in game one of a men and women's Family Weekend doubleheader.
Marietta (8-0-1) had seven different players score a goal and set a new school record for assists in a game, collecting six in the shutout victory. The previous high of five assists was set three times, including twice during the 2000 campaign.
Freshman Jessica Martinez (Strongsville/Magnificat) scored the first goal of the game, her fourth of the season, in the 15th minute off an assist from Vanessa Nicholls (Cornwall, ONT, Canada).
Senior Amy Lehosit (Pickerington) made it 2-0 with 13:18 to go in the half, when junior Dana Donchess (Poland/Poland Seminary) assisted Lehosit's 24th career goal.
Sophomore Jennifer Wickerham (Massillon/Jackson) scored the final goal of the first half, her first career goal, with 5:09 to play. Wickerham was assisted by freshman Amanda Fishburn (Cincinnati/Seton).
Following the intermission, Marietta scored three goals in a four-minute span. Senior Emilee Knowlton (Marietta) started things off with 37:29 on the clock with her third goal of the year.
Sophomore Kelly Lehosit (Pickerington) scored soon after (34:49 remaining) when sophomore Cayli Cummons (Parkersburg, WV) assisted her on her second goal of the fall.
Nicholls made it 6-0 with 33:46 to play when she headed in a cross from junior Jill Sorboro (Cuyahoga Falls). It was Nicholls' second goal of the year and Sorboro's fourth assist.
Sophomore Kileen Lehman (Elyria/Elyria Catholic) capped the scoring with 26:51 to play when she chipped a ball over the keepers head following a pass from Amy Lehosit. It was Lehman's second goal and Lehosit's fourth assist of the season.
The Pioneers out shot the Beavers 25-4 in the win. Senior Bethany Blahnik (Mansfield/Ontario) made four saves and collected her third straight shutout Saturday.
Marietta will put its unbeaten record on the line Wednesday (Sept. 28) when it takes on Shawnee State in the final non conference showdown before OAC competition. The game is slated for 6 p.m. at Don Drumm Stadium, with the men following at 8 p.m.
