Oct. 19, 2005
MARIETTA, Ohio – The Lady Pioneer women's soccer team's bid to regain a share of first place in the Ohio Athletic Conference Wednesday (Oct. 19) was denied by eighth-ranked Otterbein, who posted a 3-0 victory over Marietta at Marietta Field.

The Cardinals (13-1, 6-0 OAC) and the Pioneers (13-2-1, 4-2 OAC) battled to a scoreless tie after 45 minute of play. Otterbein's Chanel Smith broke the tie with a goal in the 55th minute, her sixth of the fall. Smith's shot squeaked into the upper right corner of the goal to give the visiting Cardinals a 1-0 advantage.

The score remained 1-0 in favor of Otterbein until the 82nd minute when a Jenna Brader pass found the foot of teammate Sara Vasbinder, who beat Marietta's goalkeeper Bethany Blahnik (Mansfield/Ontario) inside the left post. For Vasbinder, it was her sixth goal of the year.

Otterbein added its final goal less than a minute later when Karen Beers powered a shot off Blahnik and into the back of the net to give the Cardinals a 3-0 victory. The goal was her 10th of the season.

Marietta managed just three shots in the game, while Otterbein finished with 15. Blahnik made 10 saves, while her counterpart Katie Chrien collected three.

The Lady Pioneers return to action Saturday (Oct. 22) when they visist Berea to take on Baldwin-Wallace. Action with the Yellow Jackets begins at 1 p.m. at Finnie Stadium.

Pioneer fans look on with support Wednesday as Marietta and Otterbein battled for first place in the OAC.
