Lady Pioneers leave Oberlin with a 1-1 tie
Cardwell's goal in 85th minute prevents loss
Sept. 19, 2006
OBERLIN, Ohio — The Marietta College women’s soccer team had to settle for its third tie of the season Tuesday (Sept. 19), as neither the visiting Pioneers or the host Oberlin Yeowomen could put the other away in the 110 minute affair, that included two 10 minute overtime periods. The game ended 1-1.
The Pioneers (3-2-3) needed a little luck to prevent them from leaving greater Cleveland with a loss. After a scoreless first half, Marietta found itself trailing 1-0, when Oberlin (4-3-1) got a goal from Caitlin Milford in the 58th minute.
Junior Colby Cardwell (Anchorage, AK/Robert Service) tied the game in the 85th minute, when she worked her way around three defenders and blasted a shot that bounced off an Oberlin defender and into the back of the net. The goal was her third of the year, all in the last two games.
Freshman goalkeeper Jenna Freeman (Bay Village) faced 12 shots and finished with four saves in the game, Marietta compiled 16 shots against a pair of Yeowomen goalies.
The Pioneers will return to action on Saturday (Sept. 23), when they visit Bluffton for a seventh-straight non conference contest. Kickoff is slated for 1 p.m. and is part of a men’s and women’s doubleheader; the men will follow at 3 p.m. |
