Pioneers’ defense earns fourth shutout of the year

Sept. 23, 2006
BLUFFTON, Ohio — Junior Colby Cardwell (Anchorage, AK/Robert Service) supplied the offensive firepower for the third straight game to lead Marietta to a 1-0 road victory over Bluffton Saturday (Sept. 23).

With the win, the Pioneers improved to 4-2-3, while the Beavers fell to 0-7 on the year.

For Cardwell, who scored in the 48th minute and was assisted by junior Marianne Siders (Belle, W.Va./Riverside), it was her team-leading fourth of the year. All of her goals have come in the last three games.

Marietta goalkeeper Jenna Freeman (Bay Village), who finished with five saves, earned her fourth shutout of the year.

The Pioneers return to action on Wednesday (Sept. 27) when they visit Kenyon for a 4:30 p.m. non conference showdown, Marietta’s final tune-up before beginning Ohio Athletic Conference play on Saturday (Sept. 30) at home against rival Otterbein.
