Marietta shuts out rival Muskingum 2-0 to even OAC record at 1-1
Cardwell has a goal and an assist in the win

Oct. 3, 2006
NEW CONCORD, Ohio — The Marietta College women's soccer team took the short trip north to battle rival Muskingum College Tuesday (Oct. 3) in its second Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) game of the year. The Pioneers rebounded from a heart-breaking, double overtime loss to Otterbein by blanking the host Muskies 2-0.

With the win, Marietta improves to 5-4-3 overall and 1-1 in the OAC. Muskingum falls to 4-8 overall and 1-1 in the Conference.

The Pioneers got all of the offensive output that they needed from their two leading points scorers—junior Colby Cardwell (Anchorage, AK/Robert Service) and sophomore Jessica Martinez (Strongsville/Magnificat)—against the Muskies. The two combined for Marietta's first goal, when a Cardwell passe to Martinez was converted into a goal to give the Pioneers a 1-0 lead in the 32nd minute. For Martinez, it was her fourth goal of the year; Cardwell picked up her second assist.

Cardwell gave Marietta a two-goal cushion when she scored her fifth goal of the season in the 51st minute.

That was all that the Pioneers needed, as they out shot the Muskies 17-7 in the game.

Freshman goalkeeper Jenna Freeman (Bay Village) worked the full 90 minutes, making seven saves, en route to her fifth shutout of the year.

Marietta will remain on the road for its next contest, as it travels to Ada, Ohio, on Saturday (Oct. 7) for a 1 p.m. match-up with Ohio Northern.
