Marietta women battle host Ohio Northern to a 1-1 tie
Williams scores first goal of the year

Oct. 7, 2006
ADA, Ohio — A header by sophomore Allie Williams (Fishers, Ind./Hamilton Southeastern) keyed a Marietta College comeback Saturday (Oct. 7) afternoon in an important Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) meeting with host Ohio Northern University. The match-up ended in a 1-1 tie after two overtimes and helped keep the Pioneers from digging an early season hole in the race for a spot in the OAC's year-end tournament.

Williams' goal, her first of the year and fifth of her career, erased a 1-0 deficit for the Pioneers (5-4-4, 1-1-1 OAC). Sophomore Jessica Martinez (Strongsville/Magnificat) assisted Williams on the goal, which came from five yards out in the 57th minute.

Kaitlyn Sanders gave Ohio Northern (8-2-2, 2-0-1 OAC) a 1-0 advantage in the 53rd minute, when she converted a penalty kick after a Marietta foul in the box.

Neither team found the back of the net the rest of the way and the game ended in a tie. The Polar Bears out shot the Pioneers 41-4 overall and 16-2 on goal, but the Pioneer defense held strong throughout.

Marietta freshman keeper Jenna Freeman (Bay Village) finished with 14 saves in the game.

The Pioneers return to action Wednesday (Oct. 11) when they travel to Alliance for a 7 p.m. match-up with Mount Union.
