women's soccer team returns from trip to Mount Union with a 1-1
tie

Oct. 11, 2006
ALLIANCE, Ohio — Jessica Martinez's (Strongsville/Magnificat)
breakaway goal midway through the second half helped the Marietta
College women's soccer team leave the campus of Mount Union College
with a 1-1 tie after double overtime.
With the tie, the Lady Pioneers move to 5-4-5 on the year and 1-1-2
in the Ohio Athletic Conference. Marietta's previous record for
ties in a season was three. Mount Union improved to 3-9-1 overall
and 0-3-1 in Conference play.
The game, which was played in the rain and wind under the lights,
was scoreless until Brittany Huebler gave Mount
Union a 1-0 lead with a header that found the back of the net in
the 58th minute. The goal, Huebler's third of the year, was assisted
by teammate Jenny Singleton.
Martinez tied the game 13 minutes later when a save by freshman
keeper Jenna Freeman (Bay Village) eventually transitioned
into a Pioneer breakaway. The goal was Martinez's fifth of the year.
Marietta out shot Mount Union 11-9 with both teams taking two shots
in the overtime periods. Freeman finished with five saves, while
her counterpart, Kaitlyn Mallernee, had seven in
the game.
The Pioneers return to action Saturday (Oct. 14) when they play
in the first game of a men and women's Homecoming doubleheader at
Marietta Field. Baldwin-Wallace will be the opponent and kickoff
is slated for 1 p.m.
