3-2 double-overtime victory keeps Lady Pioneers' hopes alive for a soccer playoff berth
Marietta awaiting outcome of Wilmington versus Baldwin-Wallace game

Oct. 28, 2006
MARIETTA, Ohio — Sophomore Jessica Martinez (Strongsville/Magnificat) came through with her second goal of the game in the 103rd minute to give Marietta's women's soccer team a 3-2 double overtime victory over visiting John Carroll.

With the victory, the Pioneers improved to 8-5-6 overall and 4-2-3 in the Ohio Athletic Conference. Marietta finishes the regular season with 15 points. Depending on the outcome of tonight's Baldwin-Wallace and Wilmington game, Marietta could take the fourth-seed in next week's OAC Tournament.

Marietta, which was celebrating Senior Day, took a 1-0 lead when Martinez fired a shot past the John Carroll keeper who came out to challenge her in the 40th minute.

The Pioneers made it 2-0 in the 57th minute, when junior Kileen Lehman (Elyria/Elyria Catholic) scored on a shot off a cross from sophomore Allie Williams (Fishers, Ind./Hamilton Southeastern).

John Carroll would not go quietly, however, and tied the game with goal in the 72nd and 86th minute to send the game into overtime. Neither team came through in the first extra period, but Martinez did in the second.

Marietta out shot John Carroll 9-6 in the game. Each team had five corner kicks.

Jenna Freeman (Bay Village) had two saves in the game, while Alena Neton had four for the Blue Streaks.

The Pioneers now wait by their phones, hoping to get the call of a Baldwin-Wallace victory, which would eliminate Wilmington and move Marietta into fourth place.
