Three Marietta College women named All-OAC in soccer
Sorboro and Freeman earn second team honors; Martinez receives honorable mention
Nov. 9, 2006
MARIETTA, Ohio — The Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) released its 2006 women’s soccer award winners Thursday (Nov. 9), and Marietta College had three players pick up Conference honors. Senior Jill Sorboro (Cuyahoga Falls) and freshman Jenna Freeman (Bay Village) were each named to the second team, while sophomore Jessica Martinez (Strongsville/Magnificat) earned honorable mention.
Sorboro battled injuries throughout the 2006 season and was limited to just 14 games. The captain, who moved to midfield this season, did not score a point for the first time in her career, but her leadership on the field was vital to the team’s success on both sides of the ball. Sorboro, who was also named a second team All-OAC honoree in 2005, finished her career with 11 assists, which ranks fourth all-time on the Pioneers’ assist list.
Freeman made an immediate impact in goal and has already placed her name in the school’s record books. She recorded the third-best goals against average (0.90) and fourth most shutouts (7) in Marietta single-season history. Freeman also sits second all-time in goals against average and fourth in shutouts for Marietta keepers that have worked at least 1,000 minutes.
Martinez, who was also given honorable mention as a freshman, played a key role on the 2006 women’s soccer team, leading the program in goals (7) and shots taken (51). She also tallied two assists this season while playing in all 19 games. Martinez now has 13 career goals and 29 career points, both of which are just outside the top five of Marietta’s all-time bests.
Marietta finished the year with an overall record of 8-5-6 and 4-2-3 in the Ohio Athletic Conference. For the second straight year, the Pioneers just missed a bid to the Conference Tournament with a fifth place finish. Marietta is expected to have eight seniors in 2007, as it attempts to move up in the standings and make another run at the OAC Tournament.
