SUNY-Brockport tops Marietta 3-0 to win 2007 Soccer Classic
Juniata takes consolation with 10-0 victory over Rochester
Sept. 2, 2007
MARIETTA, Ohio — For the second straight year the Lady Pioneers advanced to final of the Marietta Soccer Classic to play SUNY-Brockport. The result again did not favor Marietta, as it fell to the Golden Eagles 3-0 at Marietta Field Sunday (Sept. 2). The win improved Brockport’s record to 2-0 and Pioneers fell to 1-1.
Nicole Gibaud slipped a goal past Marietta goalkeeper Jenna Freeman (Bay Village) to give Brockport an early 1-0 lead only four minutes into the contest. Jill Neidlinger assisted the goal.
Michele Cella scored the first of her two goals in the 61st minute when she took a Neidlinger thru ball and calmly finished the ball in the side netting. Cella then put the game away in the 72nd minute after she finished another pass from Neidlenger, who came away with MVP honors.
Freeman finished the game with seven saves, while Brockport’s goalkeeper Stephanie Kowell also finished with seven saves.
Brockport finished with 16 shots with seven on goal, while the Pioneers finished with 10 shots with seven on goal.
Juniata (Pa.) College dominated the consolation game, defeating Rochester (Mich.) College 10-0 in the first game of the day.
The Marietta women are back in action Tuesday (Sept. 4) when non-conference foe Wooster visits Marietta Field at 4 p.m.
