Lady Pioneers claim fourth straight Challenge Cup title
Nicholls' goal gives Marietta women a 1-0 victory over host PSU-Altoona

Sept. 16, 2007
ALTOONA, Pa. — The Marietta College women's soccer team should consider playing its home games on the campus of Penn State-Altoona after the Lady Pioneers made it four straight Challenge Cup titles by defeating the host Lions 1-0 in the 2007 championship game Sunday (Sept. 16) afternoon.

Marietta (3-2) improved to 8-0 all time at the four-team tournament. Penn State-Altoona fell to 2-2 on the year.

Senior Vanessa Nicholls (Cornwall, Ontario, Canada) scored the game-winner just 4:01 into the action. Classmate and tournament MVP Marianne Siders (Belle, W.Va./Riverside) picked up the assist by hitting Nicholls with a long throw in.

Freshman Helen Hetzel (Radnor/Buckeye Valley) collected her second straight shutout to improve to 2-0. She did not have to make a save and faced just five total shots. Marietta also finished with five shots in the win.

Joining Siders on the All-Tournament Team were Nicholls, Hetzel and 2006 MVP Jennifer Wickerham (Massillon/Jackson).

Marietta is back in action this Tuesday (Sept. 18) when it visits Rio Grande for a 4 p.m. non conference contest. The Pioneers will then return home Saturday (Sept. 22) to take on Oberlin at 2 p.m.
