Seniors lead Marietta women's soccer to 2-0 victory over rival Muskingum
Cardwell and Siders score second half goals in win

Oct. 3, 2007
MARIETTA, Ohio — It took nearly 80 minutes but the Marietta College women's soccer team was able to crack the defense of visiting Muskingum College in a 2-0 Lady Pioneers' victory Wednesday (Oct. 3) afternoon at Marietta Field.

With the victory, Marietta improves to 6-3-1 on the year and evens its record at 1-1 in the Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC). Muskingum falls to 5-5-1 overall and 0-2 in the OAC.

Neither team could get much going offensively in the first half. It looked as if the Pioneers scored a goal late in the first half, but an off sides whistle negated the play and kept the game in a scoreless tie.

A little luck finally came Marietta's way in the 80th minute to give it a 1-0 lead. A Muskingum foul just inside the left corner of the field resulted in a Marietta free kick. Senior Colby Cardwell (Anchorage, Alaska/Robert Service) bent the direct kick into the box and it went untouched into the side of the net. It was Cardwell's second goal of the season.

Seniors Kileen Lehman (Elyria/Elyria Catholic) and Marianne Siders (Belle, W.Va./Riverside) teamed up with three minutes left on the clock to give the Pioneers' some breathing room. Lehman sent a cross into the middle of the 6. The ball deflected off the backs of two Marietta players before Siders fired it over the keeper's head and into the back of the net.

Marietta finished the day with 19 shots, 12 on goal, while Muskingum had seven shots, four of which were on goal.

Freshman goalkeeper Helen Hetzel (Radnor/Buckeye Valley) made four saves while improving to 5-1-1 on the year. Princess Tarrance had 10 saves in the loss for Muskingum.

Marietta is back in action Saturday (Oct. 6) when it travels to Ada, Ohio, for a 3 p.m. showdown with Ohio Northern. The game will be the second of a men's and women's doubleheader. The men will play first at 12:30 p.m.

Colby Cardwell
