Senior captain voted to second team by members of CoSIDA
Oct. 30, 2008
DELAWARE, Ohio — The College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) released their 2008 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District Women's Soccer Teams on Thursday (Oct. 30) morning, and Marietta College senior forward Jessica Martinez (Strongsville/Magnificat) was named to the second team in District IV.
Martinez, a captain and four-year starter, currently leads the Pioneers (5-9-3, 3-2-3 OAC) in points (18), goals (7) and assists (4). On Wednesday (Oct. 29), she moved into sole possession of second place on the program's all-time goals list after scoring her 28th career goal. Martinez is also ranked third in school history with 65 career points.
Martinez has garnered an array of awards during her first three years with Marietta soccer. She is a three-time All-Ohio Athletic Conference honorable mention selection, who also earned Academic All-OAC in 2006 and 2007.
Off the field, Martinez maintains a 3.66 grade point average as a Biochemistry major. She is a member of Health Professions Club and Beta Beta Beta, a National Biology Honor Society.
Sports Information Directors from the district (all NCAA Division II, III and NAIA schools in Michigan, Ohio, Kentucky, Tennessee and Alabama) nominate and vote on selections with first team all-district selections moving onto the national ballot. In order to qualify a student-athlete must have at least a 3.30 cumulative grade point average and be a starter or key reserve.
The Academic All-America Teams program honors 816 male and female student-athletes annually who have succeeded at the highest level on the playing field and in the classroom. Individuals are selected through voting by CoSIDA, a 2,000-member organization consisting of sports public relations professionals for colleges and universities in the United States and Canada.
Marietta will close out the regular season on Saturday (Nov. 1) afternoon when the Pioneers play host to Ohio Northern University. Saturday is Senior Day at Marietta Field. Kickoff is slated for 2 p.m. The Pioneers need one more win to secure one of the six spots in next week’s OAC Tournament. Marietta could still sneak in with a tie or even a loss but would need help around the Conference. |
