Nov. 19, 2008
AUSTINTOWN, Ohio — The Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) office released its 2008 Academic All-OAC Women’s Soccer Teams on Wednesday (Nov. 19) morning, and Marietta College senior forward Jessica Martinez (Strongsville/Magnificat) was named Academic All-OAC.
It is the third straight season that Martinez, a captain, received Academic All-OAC honors. Earlier this month, she became just the fourth four-time All-OAC performer in Marietta women’s soccer history. Martinez earned All-OAC second team in 2008 after receiving honorable mention in each of her first three seasons.
Martinez, a four-year starter, finished her career second on Marietta’s all-time list with 28 career goals and third in Pioneer history with 65 career points. In 2008, she paced the squad in points (18), goals (7) and assists (4).
In addition to her All-OAC honors, Martinez was recently named ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District IV by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). Off the field, Martinez maintains a 3.66 grade point average as a Biochemistry major. She is a member of Health Professions Club and Beta Beta Beta, a National Biology Honor Society.
To qualify for Academic All-OAC honors, a student-athlete must have maintained a 3.25 GPA, be a sophomore academically and is in at least her second year of participation. She must also have been a starter or key reserve who has made a significant athletic impact. The recipients are voted on by the faculty athletic representatives.
Head Coach Pat Holguin’s squad, which featured 22 freshmen, finished the year 5-10-3 overall and 3-3-3 in the OAC. The Pioneers tied for sixth in the OAC but missed an OAC Tournament berth because of a tiebreaker for the second straight season. |
