Marietta and John Carroll women's soccer ends in 2-2 tie
Blue Streaks battle out of 2-0 deficit to secure point for each team

MARIETTA, Ohio — The Marietta College women's soccer team had visiting John Carroll University on the ropes Friday (Oct. 10) afternoon at Marietta Field by scoring two early goals, but the Blue Streaks battled back to tie the game in regulation and then the contest ended in a 2-2 tie after a pair of scoreless overtime periods. The Pioneers improved to 2-8-2 overall and 0-1-2 in the Ohio Athletic Conference. John Carroll moved to 8-2-3 overall and 1-1-1 in the OAC.
Marietta senior forward Jessica Martinez (Strongsville) put her team ahead 1-0 in the 12th minute when she lofted a shot from 20-yards out over the John Carroll keeper's head and into the back of the net. The goal was her fourth of the year and 25th of her career.

WESTERVILLE, Ohio — The Marietta College women's soccer team fell on the road to host Otterbein College 4-0 on Tuesday (Oct. 7) afternoon. The loss dropped the Pioneers' record to 2-8-1 overall and 0-1-1 in the Ohio Athletic Conference. The Cardinals, ranked fourth in the Great Lakes Region, improved to 8-1-1, 1-1 in the OAC.
Otterbein out-shot Marietta 26-4 in the game, including 14-2 in shots on goal. The Cardinals got on the board in the 15th minute when Sarah Sharbaugh scored off an assist from Cristen Herold. Otterbein made it 2-0 in the 22nd minute when Jenny Knox shot one past the keeper on a penalty kick.

TIFFIN, Ohio — The Marietta College women’s soccer team opened Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) play by earning a point in the league standings after a 1-1 tie with host Heidelberg College on Friday (Oct. 3) afternoon. Head Coach Pat Holguin’s Pioneers improved their record to 2-7-1 on the season and 0-0-1 in the OAC. The Student Princes, led by Nick Spell, a 2003 Marietta graduate and former Pioneer assistant, improved to 4-4-3, 0-0-1 in league play.

MARIETTA, Ohio — The Marietta College women's soccer team dropped a 2-1 overtime game to the visiting Kenyon College Ladies Wednesday (Oct. 1) afternoon at Marietta Field. The loss brought the Pioneers' record to 2-7 on the season, while Kenyon improved to 3-5.
Freshman Corryn Muench (Cold Spring, Ky./Newport Central Catholic) scored her third goal of the year only two minutes into the contest. Muench took a bouncing ball off a Kenyon defender and chipped the goalkeeper from 16-yards out to give Marietta a 1-0 advantage. Muench is now tied with two other teammates for the team lead in goals.

MARIETTA, Ohio — The Marietta College women's soccer team used a solid, team effort for 90 minutes to defeat visiting Thomas More (Ky.) College, 1-0, Sunday (Sept. 28) afternoon in a non-conference match-up at Marietta Field. The win improved the Pioneers' record to 2-6 overall, while the Saints fell to 5-3 on the year.
Neither Marietta nor Thomas More found many chances in the first half, but the action picked up as the teams returned from intermission in the second half. The Pioneers finally broke through in the 72nd minute. Freshman Chelsea Hennen (Wheeling, W.Va./The Linsly School) was able to power a shot from 15-yards out past the Saints' keeper and into the upper right corner of the goal to give Marietta the 1-0 advantage. The goal was Hennen's third of the season.

WASHINGTON, Pa. — The Marietta College women’s soccer team suffered a 2-1, non-conference setback to host Washington & Jefferson (Pa.) College Wednesday (Sept. 24) evening. The Pioneers fell to 1-6, while the Presidents improved to 6-2 on the season.
Marietta out-shot Washington & Jefferson 15-14, and both teams collected eight shots on goal in the game.

MARIETTA, Ohio — The Marietta College women's soccer team entered Saturday (Sept. 20) afternoon’s game against visiting St. Vincent College (Pa.) needing a victory to get on track in 2008. It took 92 minutes, but the Lady Pioneers pulled out a 4-3, overtime win over the visiting Bearcats. The win improved the Pioneers' record 1-5, while Saint Vincent fell to 3-3-1.
The Pioneers came out firing against the visiting Bearcats, scoring two goals in the first 11 minutes. Freshman Corryn Muench (Cold Spring, Ky./Newport Central Catholic) followed a shot from fellow freshman Ashley Drehs (Parma/Normandy) and calmly placed it in the back of the net in the seventh minute. Four minutes later, freshman midfielder Cara Nuss (Dayton/Carroll) followed a shot from senior Jessica Martinez (Strongsville/Magnificat) with another goal to put the Pioneers ahead 2-0.

ALTOONA, Pa. — Marietta College freshman Corryn Muench (Cold Spring, Ky./Newport Central Catholic) scored a goal with just four second to play in regulation to send Saturday (Sept. 13) afternoon's game against host Penn State-Altoona (Pa.) into overtime. The Lions, however, scored a goal early in the extra period to pull out the 3-2 victory. With the win, PSU-Altoona improved to 5-0, while Marietta fell to 0-5.
Marietta found itself trailing 1-0 in the 7th minute when Danielle Ivancich punched in a shot from the left side of the box following a pass from Meredith Barcia. The Pioneers tied the game at 1-1 in the 49th minute. Senior Jessica Martinez (Strongsville/Magnificat) sent a shot into the middle of the box that was deflected by a Lion player and into the back of the net. The goal, which was assisted by Chelsea Hennen (Wheeling, W.Va./The Linsly School), was Martinez's third of the season.

Pioneers to play two games at Penn State-Altoona this weekend

WOOSTER, Ohio — The Marietta College women's soccer team had its first road test of the 2008 season on Wednesday (Sept. 10) afternoon when the Pioneers visited the College of Wooster for a non-conference match-up. The young Pioneers held the regionally-ranked Fighting Scots scoreless for the first half, but a lone Wooster goal early in the second half was the difference in a 1-0 victory for the home team. Marietta fell to 0-4, while Wooster improved to 4-0.
Wooster, who had out-scored its first three opponents by a total of 10-1 and out-shot them by 51-12 margin, dominated 27-5 in overall shots. Marietta, however, trailed only 5-3 in shots on goal for the game.

College in Sunday (Sept. 7) morning’s consolation match of the 2008 Marietta College Classic but could not hang on and fell 3-1 to the Titans at Marietta Field. The loss drops Marietta’s record to 0-3, while the Titans improve to 3-1-1.
Freshman forward Chelsea Hennen (Wheeling W.Va./The Linsly School) scored her first collegiate goal in the 11th minute when she lofted a ball from the right side to the far post over Westminster goalkeeper Lindsey Mellott. Cara Nuss (Dayton/Carroll) assisted on the play, which gave Marietta a 1-0 advantage.

The loss drops Marietta’s record to 0-2 while Walsh improves to 1-2 on the young season. Marietta will play in the consolation match Sunday morning at 9 a.m., while Walsh advances to Sunday’s final at 1 p.m.

The Bison took a 1-0 lead with a goal in the sixth minute. Breane Minardi found the back of the net from inside the six to give her team the early advantage.

Pioneer women look to replace seven starters from last fall

MARIETTA, Ohio — Marietta College women's soccer will look to bounce back in the Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) after once again finishing the season without an OAC Tournament berth. Head Coach Patrick Holguin has brought in his biggest freshmen class since taking over the women’s program nine years ago. Having to replace seven starters will make this squad one of the youngest teams that Coach Holguin has put on the field during his tenure at Marietta.
Senior forward Jessica Martinez will provide the Pioneers with it offensive spark and leadership. Martinez led the team in goals and points a year ago on her way to earning All-OAC honorable mention. Fellow senior Allie Williams looks to once again lead the midfield after suffering a knee injury last season.
