Two women's soccer players earn Academic All-OAC honors
Martinez named Academic All-OAC for second straight year

AUSTINTOWN, Ohio — The Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) announced the 2007 Academic All-OAC women's soccer winners Tuesday (Nov. 20) morning and two Marietta College student-athletes received league recognition. Junior Jessica Martinez (Strongsville/Magnificat) earned Academic All-OAC while senior Jennifer Wickerham (Massillon/Jackson) was given honorable mention.

Martinez, a 2006 and 2007 All-OAC honorable mention forward, led the Pioneers in scoring with a team-high eight goals and two assists this fall. Martinez, who started all 17 games, had three game-winning goals this season.

AUSTINTOWN, Ohio — The Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) released its 2007 women's soccer award winners Tuesday (Nov. 13) morning, and Head Coach Pat Holguin's Marietta College squad had two players earn league honors. Senior Colby Cardwell (Anchorage, Alaska/Robert Service) and junior Jessica Martinez (Strongsville/Magnificat) both received All-OAC honorable mention in 2007.

Martinez, a 2006 All-OAC honorable mention honoree, led the Pioneers in scoring with a team-high eight goals and two assists this fall. The forward, who started all 17 games, had three game-winning goals this season.

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Ohio — The 2007 season came to an end for the Marietta College women's soccer team Friday (Oct. 24) afternoon following a 3-0 loss to host John Carroll University at Don Shula Stadium.

The Pioneers entered the final day of their regular season needing a win or a tie to advance to next week's six-team Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) Tournament. Unfortunately, Marietta came away with neither and will be left out of the OAC Tournament for the third straight season, each time by the slimmest of margins.

WILMINGTON, Ohio — The Marietta College women's soccer team dropped a heart-breaker to host Wilmington College Tuesday (Oct. 23) evening. The Pioneers, who led most of the game, gave up a late goal to tie the game and then lost on an own goal in overtime.

The loss drops Marietta's record to 8-7-1 overall and 3-6 in the Ohio Athletic Conference. Wilmington improves to 11-5-2 overall and 4-3-1 in the OAC.

Lady Pioneers tie school record with five assists in 8-0 victory

MARIETTA, Ohio — The Marietta College women's soccer team knew Friday (Oct. 19) afternoon's game was an important one at Marietta Field. The Pioneers, who were playing in front of both a Senior Day and Homecoming crowd, improved their place in the Ohio Athletic Conference standings with an 8-0 victory over visiting Heidelberg College.

The win improves Marietta's record to 8-6-1 overall and 3-4 in the OAC. It also gives them nine points in the standings, which ties them for fifth place with Wilmington. The Quakers have a chance to move into sole possession of that spot, depending on their outcome Saturday at John Carroll. The top six teams will make the OAC Tournament. Heidelberg falls to 4-12 overall and 2-5 in the OAC.

MARIETTA, Ohio — A goal from freshman midfielder Kaley Donovan (Canfield) just 24 seconds into overtime propelled the Marietta College women's soccer team to a 1-0 victory over visiting Mount Union College Tuesday (Oct. 9) afternoon at Marietta Field.

With the win, the Pioneers improved to 7-4-1 overall and 2-2 in the Ohio Athletic Conference. The victory keeps Marietta in the middle of the hunt for one of the six OAC Tournament bids. The Purple Raiders, meanwhile, fell to 3-9-1 overall and 0-4 in the OAC.

ADA, Ohio — The Marietta College women’s soccer team suffered its second straight road loss, falling to Ohio Northern 4-0 Saturday (Oct. 6) afternoon in Ada. The loss drops the Pioneers' record to 6-4-1overall and 1-2 in the Ohio Athletic Conference, while the Polar Bears improved to 6-4-1overall and 3-0 in the young OAC season.

The Polar Bears’ first three goals were scored within the first 20 minutes of the match. Jamie Eiben opened the scoring at 5:30 mark with a 25-yard blast over Marietta goalkeeper Helen Hetzel (Radnor/Buckeye Valley) to put ONU up 1-0.

MARIETTA, Ohio — It took nearly 80 minutes but the Marietta College women's soccer team was able to crack the defense of visiting Muskingum College in a 2-0 Lady Pioneers' victory Wednesday (Oct. 3) afternoon at Marietta Field.

With the victory, Marietta improves to 6-3-1 on the year and evens its record at 1-1 in the Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC). Muskingum falls to 5-5-1 overall and 0-2 in the OAC.

The Cardinals (4-4-1, 1-0 OAC) dominated the game, out-shooting the Pioneers (5-3-1, 0-1 OAC) 26-5 overall and 9-3 in shots on goal.

CANTON, Ohio — The Marietta College women’s soccer team traveled to Walsh University Tuesday (Sept. 25) afternoon for its final non conference test before beginning Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) play.

The two teams battled for 110 minutes but neither could crack the other’s defense for a goal.

Marietta (5-2-1) out-shot Walsh (7-2-1) 11-9, but the Cavaliers held the 6-3 advantage in shots on goal.

MARIETTA, Ohio — Senior midfielder Vanessa Nicholls (Cornwall, Ontario, Canada/Cornwall Collegiate) had her hand in both goals Saturday (Sept. 22) afternoon as the Lady Pioneers defeated the Oberlin Yeowomen 2-0 at Marietta Field.

The win improves Marietta’s record to 5-2 and is its fourth straight victory. Oberlin fell to 2-5-1 on the year.

RIO GRANDE, Ohio — Marietta College senior Marianne Siders (Belle, W.Va./Riverside) and junior Jessica Martinez (Strongsville/Magnificat) increased their season point totals to 10 Tuesday (Sept. 18) afternoon en route to leading the Lady Pioneers' women's soccer team to a 5-1 victory over host Rio Grande.

Caity White gave the Redwomen (3-5) a 1-0 lead in the 20th minute. Marietta (4-2), however, bombarded the opposing goalkeeper with 37 shots, 21 on goal, and scored five unanswered goals. Rio Grande managed just five shots, all on goal, in the loss.

ALTOONA, Pa. — The Marietta College women's soccer team should consider playing its home games on the campus of Penn State-Altoona after the Lady Pioneers made it four straight Challenge Cup titles by defeating the host Lions 1-0 in the 2007 championship game Sunday (Sept. 16) afternoon.

Marietta (3-2) improved to 8-0 all time at the four-team tournament. Penn State-Altoona fell to 2-2 on the year.

Senior Vanessa Nicholls (Cornwall, Ontario, Canada) scored the game-winner just 4:01 into the action. Classmate and tournament MVP Marianne Siders (Belle, W.Va./Riverside) picked up the assist by hitting Nicholls with a long throw in.

ALTOONA, Pa. — Coming into Saturday’s (Sept. 15) match-up, the Marietta College senior women had never lost a game in the Penn State-Altoona Challenge Cup. They kept their streak alive with a 3-0 win against Albright College (Pa.).

The win improves the Pioneers record to 2-2 on the year, while the Lions fall to 1-3.

Lady Pioneers off until Sept. 15

MARIETTA, Ohio — The Marietta College women's soccer team took the field for the third time in four days Tuesday (Sept. 4), as the College of Wooster visited Marietta Field for a non conference showdown. The Fighting Scots, also playing their third game in as many days, looked much fresher on the field and it translated into a 4-0 victory in their favor.

With the temperature hovering near 90 degrees, the referee actually implemented water breaks midway through each half. The pauses in play only deferred the offensive onslaught from Wooster (3-0), who out-shot Marietta (1-2) 20-5 in the victory. 14 of the Fighting Scots', while four of the Pioneers', shots were on goal.

SUNY-Brockport tops Marietta 3-0 to win 2007 Soccer Classic
Juniata takes consolation with 10-0 victory over Rochester

MARIETTA, Ohio — For the second straight year the Lady Pioneers advanced to final of the Marietta Soccer Classic to play SUNY-Brockport. The result again did not favor Marietta, as it fell to the Golden Eagles 3-0 at Marietta Field Sunday (Sept. 2). The win improved Brockport’s record to 2-0 and Pioneers fell to 1-1.

Nicole Gibaud slipped a goal past Marietta goalkeeper Jenna Freeman (Bay Village) to give Brockport an early 1-0 lead only four minutes into the contest. Jill Neidlinger assisted the goal.

MARIETTA, Ohio — Junior Jessica Martinez (Strongsville/Magnificat) scored two goals in the first nine minutes to set the tone for a 7-2 Marietta College victory over visiting Rochester (Mich.) College in the first women's game of the 2007 Marietta College Soccer Classic Saturday (Sept. 1) at Marietta Field.

With the win, the Lady Pioneers (1-0) advance to Sunday (Sept. 2) afternoon's championship game at 1 p.m. against the winner of Saturday's 3 p.m. game between Juniata (Pa.) and SUNY-Brockport (N.Y.). The Lady Warriors (0-1) will play the loser in the consolation game at 9 a.m.

Pioneers striving to make OAC Tournament

MARIETTA, Ohio — Marietta, under the guidance of eighth-year Head Coach Pat Holguin, will look to take that important next step in 2007. After finishing just shy of an Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) Tournament bid the last two years, the Pioneers are working to overcome that hurdle and become a consistent participant in the year-end tournament.

Marietta will be a veteran-led squad with six seniors—Vanessa Nicholls, Natalie Jackson, Kileen Lehman, Jennifer Wickerham, Marianne Siders, and Colby Cardwell—providing the necessary leadership and in-game experience for the younger players to feed off of this fall.
