Pioneer women's tennis defeats Shawnee State 5-4
Marietta opens OAC play on Saturday at Heidelberg
March 24, 2009
MARIETTA, Ohio — The Marietta College women's tennis team improved to 1-1 with a 5-4 non-conference victory over visiting Shawnee State University on Tuesday (March 24) afternoon at the Beren Tennis Center.
The Pioneers captured the early lead in the match with two wins in doubles action. Senior Kainani Lovette (Salem) and sophomore Corin Bonnett (Bay Village/Bay) earned an 8-6 win at third singles, while senior Amanda Carraher (Hilliard/Hilliard Davidson) and sophomore Lauren McKiernan (Parkersburg, W.Va./South) remained undefeated with an 8-4 victory at first singles.
Head Coach Danika Cox's squad then knew that a split in the six singles matches would help it secure the first win of the season. The Pioneers did just that. Carraher made quick work of her opponent at first singles, winning 6-0, 6-1. McKiernan did the same at second singles, earning the 6-0, 6-2 win. Freshman Jamie Taylor (Salisbury, Md./Parkside) then won a three-set battle (2-6, 6-3, 6-4) at sixth singles to wrap up the victory.
Marietta is back in action on Saturday (March 28) afternoon when the Pioneers visit Heidelberg University for its Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) opener. The match is slated for 1 p.m.
