Marietta sweeps Capital 9-0 in women's tennis
Pioneers win first OAC match of the season

MARIETTA, Ohio — The Marietta College women's tennis team collected its first Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) win of the season with a 9-0 sweep of visiting Capital University Thursday (April 9) afternoon at the Beren Tennis Center.
The Pioneers improved to 2-5 overall and 1-4 in league play. The Crusaders fell to 1-10, 1-4 in the OAC.
Marietta began the match with three wins in doubles play. Senior Amanda Carraher (Hilliard/Hilliard Davidson) and junior Lauren McKiernan (Parkersburg, W.Va./South) won their third straight match at first singles, defeating their opponents 8-4. Junior Jen Wolfe (Ravenswood, W.Va.) and freshman Caitlin Cornell (South Park, Pa.) combined for their first win together at second doubles by pulling out the 8-4 victory. Senior Kainani Lovette (Salem) and freshman Corin Bonnett (Bay Village/Bay) moved to 2-2 together at third singles with an 8-5 win.
Carraher overcame a first-set loss to remain undefeated at first single with a 5-7, 6-4, 1-0 (10-1) victory. McKiernan also won in three sets, defeating her opponent at second singles 6-0, 4-6, 6-0. Cornell won 6-0, 2-6, 1-0 (13-11) at third singles for her first individual victory of the year. Lovette also notched her first singles win with a 6-0, 6-3 victory in the fourth spot. Wolfe, who had a 6-0, 6-0 victory, won for the second time in as many tries at fifth singles. Bonnett also earned her first sixth singles win with a 4-6, 7-6 (7-4), 1-0 (10-3) victory.
Marietta is back in action on Tuesday (April 14) afternoon when the Pioneers play host to Wilmington College at 3:30 p.m.
