Connect MC

Every year, student machines introduced to the campus network may contain harmful viruses and malware. The best way to insure the integrity of the network is to require that all anti-virus software and operating systems are current and maintained.

Each student accessing the Marietta College network is required to login and to maintain operating system patches and an up-to-date anti-virus software package.

Note: The registration software will not collect any personal information.

Please review the following instructions to download software for each piece of hardware that you plan to bring to campus.

Protect Before You Connect

An unprotected computer can be hazardous to the entire network. Marietta College implemented the Cisco Clean Access system to block unprotected computers from accessing the Internet until they meet specific requirements, including having the latest updates for antivirus software and Microsoft Windows.

The following steps must be completed before connecting to the network.

Update Windows

  • Visit Microsoft Windows Update.
  • Follow the instructions to download updates.
  • Continue visiting Windows Update until all files are up to date.

Get Virus Protection

  • All students accessing the network on a PC are required to have updated anti-virus software.

Symantec Live Update is free for all MC students and is available for PCs (using Internet Explorer). The program can be obtained from the "Anti-Virus" folder in your MyMC briefcase (FileName: Symantec Anti-virus.msi).

    • To uninstall a previous version of Live Update,
      • to uninstall symantec 9 and 10.0, use password: symantec!@#
      • the new install of symantec 10.1.5, use password: marietta
  • Anti-virus and antispyware software for Macs are not required; however, the software can be obtained from the "Anti-Virus" folder in your MyMC briefcase.
  • If you are switching to Symantec Antivirus from a different antivurus program, you must completely remove your old antivirus software before installing Norton. (Visit the Virus Protection page for additional information.)

Once you have completed these steps, setting up your computer on-campus should be easy:

  • Plug in your Ethernet cable,
  • Open up your browser (Internet Explorer) and
  • Follow the instructions on screen.

Windows Service Pack Information

Microsoft requires that all computers running Windows Update have valid license keys. If you do not have a valid key, you will not be able to download critical updates from Microsoft, and therefore will not be able to access the Internet. Visit Microsoft's How to Tell website to determine if your copy of Windows is valid.
