The Internship Program

THE BASICS FOR STUDENTS: Why, when, and other things to consider…

Why intern?

  • To explore a possible career field
  • To gain valuable work-related skills
  • To enhance your professional connections
  • To integrate what you’re learning in the classroom with applied knowledge
  • To obtain full time jobs offers
  • To compete successfully in a marketplace where most students graduating from college will have done at least one internship

When should you do an internship?

It's never too early and it's never too late.

At Marietta College, you can do an internship, fall, spring or summer and obtain credit whether or not you're getting paid.

Some majors/departments may not allow you to count your internship for credit, but the experience and resume building are always important!

Steps to Finding an Internship

STEP ONE:

Set goals and consider some issues: * Make sure you set up meetings to discuss your plan with your academic advisor and the internship coordinator in your dept.; as well as the Career Center.  We are all here to assist!

  • Credit – Are you considering obtaining credit? Most students at Marietta receive between 1- 3 credits for their internship experience but it does depend on the nature of your internship and your academic department. One internship credit hour typically equates to between 40-60 work hours. It's important to contact your department's internship coordinator and make sure that you follow the checklist of things to do in order to register the experience for credit.

The requirements to earn academic credit are fairly consistent across departments. The most frequent requirements include a written report, journal, and oral presentation. Other requirements include a written letter from an immediate supervisor, supervisor evaluation, or research paper.

  • Graded/Non-Graded – Some departments award a grade for an internship, others award only pass/fail or credit/no credit. Again, you’ll need to check with your department’s internship coordinator.
  • Pay – Do you have to be paid? Fields such as business and the sciences often provide compensation, while many arts and non-profit organizations cannot afford to pay you.

At Marietta College, your full time flat tuition rate covers internships done during the academic year unless the credit(s) represents an overload. Overload fee per credit is $340. During the summer, you will have to pay $340 per internship, regardless of the credits earned. Remember that you can often combine part time, paid work with an unpaid internship, if necessary. It doesn’t have to be all or nothing!

  • Location:
What is your preference? Will you be living at home, on campus or elsewhere?
  • Career Field: Are you trying to obtain an internship related to major or to a particular interest that may or may not be related to your major? Are you trying to figure out what industry or career field you’d like to enter once you graduate?
  • Liability: Am I covered under the College's insurance while performing my internship? (If it's for credit, then YES.)

STEP TWO:

Prepare your resume, cover letter and application materials (portfolio) and conduct a practice interview: See the tutorial section of this website for more information on resumes, cover letters, portfolios and interviewing.

Contact the Career Center to have your resume, cover letter, and application materials reviewed and to set up your mock interview. It can be videotaped, if requested!

STEP THREE:

Search for internship opportunities and refine your application materials so that they are targeted to the internship position(s) to which you’re applying.

Use the internship search resources.

STEP FOUR:

Deciding which opportunity is right for you can take some soul-searching and advising from your faculty and the Career Center staff.
