Journalism

In today's world, news and information spread at incredible speeds, and it's the journalist's job to make sense of it all. At Marietta, our journalism program will prepare you for the rapidly changing field of communications by showing you what it takes to work in web, print, and broadcast formats. And as you learn to perform professional tasks, you'll take classes in ethics and research, plus a series of carefully selected courses that teach you to think critically; develop leadership skills; and understand the social, economic, and political forces that affect people's lives.

Facilities

We have so many media outlets on campus that it's easy for you to get experience in print and broadcast journalism, even as a freshman. The McKinney Mass Media Center features:

WMRT-FM 88.3: a 9,200-watt student-run station, with a range of 30 miles, that broadcasts classical music, jazz, and show tunes, as well as national, regional, state and local news, weather and sports -- including play-by-play of Marietta College sports and student-oriented talk shows.

WCMO-FM 98.5: a 10-watt station that broadcasts contemporary music and local events throughout the campus and within a six-mile radius of the City of Marietta. Nearly all of the programming is live and entirely student-driven.

WCMO-TV (Channel 15): an on-campus TV station that broadcasts student-produced nightly news and programs to 12,000 households. The TV facilities include a large main studio, master control, field production equipment, and Final Cut Pro 3 editing system (similar to the systems used by CNN and ESPN).

The Marcolian: one of the top four small-college newspapers in the country, this weekly newspaper has a circulation of 3,000. Students recently won honorable mention in the Overall Excellence Category in competition sponsored by The Society of Collegiate Journalists.

The Mariettana: Marietta's yearbook published by students in Mass Media and Graphic Design and providing students with opportunities in journalism, photography, advertising, and design.

Required Courses

Journalism courses stress every stage of the writing process for all media. They're designed to give you a broad background and understanding of the field. These courses include:

  • Photography and Visual Communications
  • Writing for Media
  • Broadcast Journalism
  • Editing
  • Desktop Publishing
  • Website Design
  • Senior Capstone Course: Media Ethics and Law

Journalism majors must take an additional Mass Media course like Corporate Communications, Advanced Video Production, or Advertising Copy and Layout.

Requirements for a Minor
Mass Media 101, 207, 311, 360, and 420; and either Mass Media 307 or 308.

Internships

While a journalism student, you'll complete a professional internship that combines what you learn in class with extensive writing and reporting opportunities off campus. And because of the willingness of Marietta alumni to help current students, our majors intern at places like CNN, Clear Channel Radio, Ohio News Network, The Marietta Times, and regional TV stations.

Clubs & Organizations

The Society for Collegiate Journalists is a national honorary society for collegiate mass communications. It selects students who have been active in journalism or broadcasting for one full year at the institutionand who exemplify academic excellence.

Omicron Delta Kappa (ODK)is the national leadership honor society that selects students showing superior scholarship, leadership, and exemplary character.

The Vernon E. "Dan" McGrew Scholarship is given to qualified students in the Department of Mass Media.

The William M. Sheppard Scholarship is awarded to a student interested in print media and majoring in one of the programs in the Department of Mass Media.

The Carleton Knight III Memorial goes to the graduating senior demonstrating excellence in a mass-media program.
