Who can study abroad?

Any student who is in good academic standing can apply to study abroad. Specific study abroad programs have GPA requirements but each program is different.

What is the typical length of a study abroad program?

Your time abroad can vary. A typical summer program can be 2-8 weeks in length. Semester programs can be between 4 and 6 months in length.

When can I study abroad?

Marietta College students most often study abroad during their junior year. However, in recent years students in their sophomore and senior years also have studied abroad.

Where can I study abroad?

The opportunities are vast since there are study abroad opportunities in numerous locations. There are also providers that offer multiple destinations within one program. Some programs are more hands on than others, including internship and service learning opportunities. The study abroad library has resources about each program.

How can I find out about study abroad programs?

The Study Abroad library is located in Thomas 214. There you will find multiple catalogs from different TPP's (Third Party Providers). The office is open during regular business hours and you must schedule an initial meeting with the Programs Assistant prior to applying for a Study Abroad program. The Programs Assistant's office is Thomas 214C.

Does it matter what my major is to study abroad?

No. Courses are offered in multiple disciplines. While you have the option to take classes in many subjects, there are some programs with a specialized academic focus. Some of the resources in the study abroad library highlight which academic disciplines are available in each program location.

Can I study abroad more than once?

Yes, absolutely. There are not limits to how often you can study abroad. (Marietta College reserves the right to limit transfer of financial aid to two semesters).

Will I get credit for my classes abroad?

Yes. You will receive letter grade credit for your study abroad classes and there is no pass/fail option. Every grade you receive will appear on your transcripts.

What types of classes can I take abroad?

Students can take classes in multiple disciplines. Past Marietta College study abroad students have studied language, general education courses or courses in their majors. Programs offer courses in English and/or the local language. Prerequisite language skills may be required for subjects at local universities.

Can I study abroad if I do not speak another language?

Yes. There are many opportunities to take courses in English even if English is not the primary language. Many programs offer local language courses in addition to other subjects taught in English. It is not required to have advanced language proficiency in order to study abroad. If one of your goals is to improve your current language skills or learn a new language, you will want to look at prerequisites in the program materials.

What are my housing options when abroad?

Each program is different but the most common housing options are with a host family (home stay), in a dormitory, or apartment. When you research a program look at what housing options are offered. Living with a host family is an excellent way to improve you foreign language skills.
