"What can I do with an English major?"
Students choosing the English major discover that the department's graduates include attorneys, software engineers, professors, hospital administrators, technical writers, CEOs, song writers, and authors of fiction.
Other graduates now enjoy successful careers in management, publishing, advertising, journalism, banking, broadcasting, and social services or continue their studies at institutions such as Tulane, Harvard, Boston University, and University of Toronto.
Students majoring in English discover that reading literature and writing critically under guided instruction constitute excellent training for a variety of careers. Our English faculty are committed to the proposition that the act of interpreting a work by William Shakespeare or Virginia Woolf not only encourages students to think seriously about human values, but also provides an opportunity to gain practical analytical and technical skills.
Given an increasingly knowledge-intensive economy that rewards high intellectual and verbal ability, we strive to educate our students and majors to be perceptive readers, logical thinkers, and persuasive writers. This is evident by the track record of our graduates.
Vision
The English Department is a vital, productive community of scholars devoted to developing the curiosity, creativity, knowledge, and analytical skills that will equip students to face the challenges of a changing world, achieve success in meaningful careers, and develop a commitment to lifelong learning.
