Wireless routers, hubs, and/or access points will no longer be allowed on the campus network.
Do not bring them to campus.
Other Networking Devices
Non-computer Networked Devices such as PDAs, PlayStations and Xboxes
Game consoles and other networked devices that need special consideration—or are not capable of running a browser—must register a Media Access Control (MAC) address, a unique number that allows these machines to connect to a network.
To determine and register the MAC address for each device, visit: https://mcnet.marietta.edu/~it/register/
Information Technology allows Internet connectivity for these devices, but it does not offer support and bandwidth demands are not guaranteed.
Call 740-376-4860 for more information.
Voice Over IP Networks providing Internet telephone service, including Lingo, Skype and Vonage
Information Technology allows Internet connectivity for Voice Over IP devices run through a PC.
Independent routers to support these services are not permitted on the campus network.
Bandwidth demands are not guaranteed.
Cisco Clean Access (CCA)
Cisco Clean Access (CCA) is a system implemented in large networks to:
1. Verify and manage the users connecting to the network
2. Keep the network secure by enforcing good security standards
A CCA client is required to be installed on the computer, which will verify that the computer is secure enough to be allowed access to the network.
It will check for the latest:
- Windows Updates,
- Automatic Updates,
- Symantec AntiVirus, and
- other essential security standards.
The client will not collect any personal information, only information regarding the security of the system. In turn, this will greatly reduce the spread of viruses across the network and help keep your information safe and your computing experience enjoyable.
For more information on CCA, download the CCA: At-A-Glance PDF from Cisco.
Protect Before You Connect
An unprotected computer can be hazardous to the entire network. Marietta College implemented the Cisco Clean Access system to block unprotected computers from accessing the Internet until they meet specific requirements, including having the latest updates for antivirus software and Microsoft Windows.
The following steps must be completed before connecting to the network.
Update Windows
- Visit Microsoft Windows Update.
- Follow the instructions to download updates.
- Continue visiting Windows Update until all files are up to date.
Get Virus Protection
-
All students accessing the network on a PC are required to have updated anti-virus software.
Symantec Live Update is free for all MC students and is available for PCs (using Internet Explorer). The program can be obtained from the "Anti-Virus" folder in your MyMC briefcase (FileName: Symantec Anti-virus.msi).
- To uninstall a previous version of Live Update,
- to uninstall symantec 9 and 10.0, use password: symantec!@#
- the new install of symantec 10.1.5, use password: marietta
- Anti-virus and antispyware software for Macs are not required; however, the software can be obtained from the "Anti-Virus" folder in your MyMC briefcase.
- If you are switching to Symantec Antivirus from a different antivurus program, you must completely remove your old antivirus software before installing Norton. (Visit the Virus Protection page for additional information.)
Once you have completed these steps, setting up your computer on-campus should be easy:
- Plug in your Ethernet cable,
- Open up your browser (Internet Explorer) and
- Follow the instructions on screen.
Windows Service Pack Information
Microsoft requires that all computers running Windows Update have valid license keys. If you do not have a valid key, you will not be able to download critical updates from Microsoft, and therefore will not be able to access the Internet.
Visit Microsoft's How to Tell website to determine if your copy of Windows is valid.

GO PRINT
Why GO PRINT?
GO PRINT is:
A program set up to reduce the amount of paper usage, toner cartridges, printer service calls to computer labs on campus. During 2008, studies were conducted in the two most highly used computer labs, the Library (public area and computer lab), and Thomas Hall. It was determined that something needed to be done.
Some of the main concerns about printing were:
The amount of paper being used:
- Webpages printed and not retrieved
- Reams of paper being printed with garbled material
- Printed copies never picked up.
- The number of Toner cartridges being used.
- The number of service calls for printer repairs.
- The need to provide an adequate printing environment in all campus labs.
- The need to discourage waste from a few students in order that the majority have their needs fulfilled.
An Alternate Approach
After the Survey was complete it was decided that an alternate approach was needed which would be of benefit to all. Issues that were kept in mind were: Greening the Campus, saving money for the college and for the campus. Turning from being a throw-away campus to an Environmentally Conscious Campus was a concern to all. Yet, we wanted to make sure we didn't generate a new cost to the students.
The advantages of GO PRINT are:
- Saves the Environment
- Saves the College
- Creates an Awareness of paper use
- Helps Green our world
Directions for using GO PRINT on a lab machine.
How GO PRINT works
- Each student will be allotted 500 Black & White pages to print on their student ID card.
- You will login to computers with your email name & password: ex. Login: Abc001 Password: xly123
- IMPORTANT - you must log off each time after you finish, or another person's print jobs could be logged onto your card.
- When you print, you will print to a print queue attached to a print release station located on each floor of the Library.
- Thomas Lab is different. There are no print release stations. There will be a web release client in the toolbar (bottom right). Students will click it, then login with username & password. REMEMBER to Log out each time!!!
For more information on using GO PRINT, visit the FAQ or call the helpdesk at x4860.
