Dear Marietta College Community,

The horrendous events that took place in Charlottesville, Virginia, over the past weekend are heartbreaking and insupportable. We at Marietta College stand with the University of Virginia, the City of Charlottesville, and all of Virginia in denouncing the hatred, racism and violence that white supremacist groups displayed.

We also offer our prayers and condolences to the families of Heather Heyer and the Virginia State Police officers — H. Jay Cullen and Berke Bates — who lost their lives as these appalling events evolved.

As Marietta College prepares for the start of a new academic year, I am proud that we have a diverse campus and we celebrate this by showing good conversation, tolerance and inclusion. Marietta College will not tolerate hatred, racism, or the violence that we have witnessed in Charlottesville. Marietta College is a place where we embrace the notion of shared ideas and respect for others. Anything short of this is not acceptable.

The University of Virginia and Charlottesville are in our thoughts as we stand in support of them.

With regards,

Bill Ruud

President
