Forensics Team earns five awards at Bowling Green competition

Forensics Team earns five awards at Bowling Green competition
November 20, 2008

Marietta College’s Forensics Team earned five awards during a recent tournament at Bowling Green State University.

Ryan Ellis ’11 (Parkersburg, W.Va.) claimed the first-place award in Informative Speaking. Ellis also received the top Pi Kappa Delta award for Informative Speaking.

“I had an absolute blast at this tournament,” Ellis said. “The competition was great, and I’m so excited about the results. I was just hoping to make it into finals; I never expected to win first place. We had the opportunity to compete against some of the best teams we will face this year, and I think the experience will help us immensely in later competitions. I am really looking forward to the next tournaments we go to. No matter what the results, traveling with the team is always so much fun.”

Political Science professor publishes article in encyclopedia

Political Science professor publishes article in encyclopedia
November 19, 2008

Marietta College’s Dr. Jacqueline DeLaat, McCoy Professor of Political Science, has recently completed an article for the 2009 volume of “Governing America: Major Policies and Decisions of Federal, State, and Local Government.”

Her article, about 5,000 words on gender discrimination, will be featured in the section on Civil Rights policy. Her article was accepted based on the excellence of the work. The publishers looked for accomplished scholars in political science, history and other disciplines to contribute articles and they aimed to assign every article to an author who has substantial credentials in the appropriate policy area.

“This was more work than I had originally expected, because all forms of gender discrimination needed to be mentioned, along with government efforts on these issues, while still keeping the article fairly succinct,” DeLaat said.

November 18, 2008

A group of students from Marietta College’s McDonough Center for Leadership and Business are coordinating a fundraiser for the Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund that ends Nov. 25.

Celia Brockway ’11, a member of the students who regularly volunteer at the local Red Cross, hopes their effort will encourage people to donate to what they believe is a good cause. “The fundraiser will be donated to the Red Cross to go toward Disaster Relief funds following this year’s hurricane season,” she said.

People can donate their money at various places around campus. The donation cans are located at Upper Gilman, Gilman Dining Hall, Izzy’s, Dorothy Webster parlor, Dyson Baudo Recreation Center information desk, Book Store and the mailroom.
