Dr. Livengood's area of specialization is in early American literature, with an emphasis on 19th-century women writers. Classes she teaches regularly include the early American survey, the early American Novel, Major American Authors, Diversity in Literature, Slavery and Literature, and Methods of Literary Study. Dr. Livengood has published articles in Studies in American Humor and Legacy, and in 2012 she was awarded the Edward G. Harness Outstanding Education Award.
