Dear Marietta College Family:
Every day, I have the privilege to walk the beautiful brick path that leads me from the President’s House to Irvine Hall. And every day, as I watch students, faculty, staff, alumni, and visitors make their way using that same path, I am reminded that the bricks we’re walking on are a tribute to a son’s sacrifice while in service to America.
The Christy Mall was dedicated to memory of Air Force 1st Lt. Richard N. Christy II, who died while serving in Vietnam. Lt. Christy was killed in action onFebruary 17, 1972. He was the son of the late Emeritus Trustee R. Neil Christy ’41 and Doris Christy, and nephew to the late Emeritus Trustee F. Leonard Christy and Helen Gramlich Christy ’41.
This Memorial Day, Judy and I will pause to honor all of the valiant American service men and women who gave their lives in defense of our country. We will also pay our respect to the many Marietta College students, alumni, staff and faculty — from the Civil War to Operation Iraqi Freedom — who made the ultimate sacrifice during their service to this great nation.
Wherever you are this Memorial Day, please take a moment to recognize the brave men and women of our Armed Forces who died in the service of our country, and whose very lives protected your right to be an American.
