Commuter Frequently Asked Questions

Who is considered to be a commuter student at Marietta College?

Any student who does not reside in any of the residential halls would be considered a commuter student.

The following questions are organized by Campus Information, Campus Resources, Parking and Dining.

Campus Information

How can I find out about what's going on at MC?

Check your campus emails and voicemails on a daily basis.

If you’re not on campus, call 740-376-3000. When prompted, press * and your mailbox number. After entering your password, you’ll have access to your voicemail.

Also check this Web site for important information about campus events, athletics, etc.

How will I know if classes are cancelled due to inclement weather?

Check your local news and radio stations for any announcements of cancellations or delays. Also check your campus email, voicemail, and the campus Web site for up-to-date information.

The information line, 376-HELP, also provides information about the conditions on campus.

What if I wanted to stay with a friend on campus overnight?

You are permitted to be an overnight guest for only Friday and Saturday nights with the permission of your host and your host’s roommate.

Please refer to the Residence Life Handbook in pages 13-15 for more information about the visitation policy.

Campus Resources

Where is a good place to study and/or do homework?

The library is probably the best place for commuters to do homework.

Is there anywhere commuter students can go to hang out or relax?

The second floor of Andrews Hall has a TV/Commuter Lounge and a kitchen area designed for commuter students.

Where can I leave my belongings between classes?

Student Life provides free lockers for students to rent next to Izzy’s. However, it is suggested that you do not place any valuables in these lockers for security precautions.

Can commuter students use the health services?

Of course. After all, you paid for the fee like everyone else.

How come my Student ID card won’t let me into any of the residence halls?

It's the same reason for all students. Residential students' ID cards only work in the residence halls they live in.

In other words, if a student from one hall wanted to visit someone from another hall, he or she would have to contact that person so he/she can open the door. This is for the safety and security of our students to prevent any intrusions.

There are call boxes outside the entrance of each residence hall so you can contact someone to let you inside.

What should I do if I lose my ID card?

Go to CPS. They will get you a new card and replace ID cards that have become too old or worn out for use.

If commuter students get in trouble on campus, will they be arrested because they are not residents of Marietta College?

No. You are a student of Marietta College. If you get into trouble on campus, you will be treated the same as any other student.

The response to each incident is determined by the nature of the situation.  Some students are arrested and disciplined; some are just disciplined.

Parking

Where can I park on campus?

Freshmen who possess specially marked permits can park at Don Drumm, the Church Street Lot and the Circle in front of Marietta Hall. For additional information, contact Campus Services at x 4611.

Upperclassmen can park in the Hermann Lot, behind A&H and ATO lots, the IGA lot (by the Gathering Place), McCoy lot, Mills lot, the lot next to the Delta Epsilon House, and the gravel lot outside of Parsons on Butler Street.

If I came to the campus during the weekend, would I still need to park in the designated parking lots based on my permit?

Not necessarily. After 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday and during the weekends, you can park in any of the parking lots.

However, if you were to park in a lot that is not designated for commuter students on a Sunday evening, and you left your vehicle overnight, it would be very possible for you to receive a ticket on Monday morning.

Will someone escort me to my car?

If you would like an escort to/from your car, contact Campus Police for more information.

How do I change my permit when I become an upperclassman?

Go to CPS, and they will change your permit free of charge.

Are there any meal plans designed for commuter students?
