faculty
When used alone, treat it as a singular noun ("our faculty is the best"). When referring to
the people who make up the faculty, say "faculty members."
fall semester
Family Weekend
Capitalize. This event is held in the fall.
fax
Use lower-case letters (or capitalize the first letter if starting a sentence or line of
formatted text with it). Do not use all caps.
Fayerweather Hall
Co-ed residence hall for 58 upper-class students. The building was originally completed
in 1906. It was renovated and re-opened as a residence hall in the fall of 2005. Prior to
that, it was last used as a residence hall in the early 1990s.
fewer, less
Use fewer when referring to items that can be counted. (Ex: "He said fewer than 15
responses would not provide an adequate sample for his survey.") Less refers to an
uncountable bulk or quantity. (Ex: "Less than half of the food supply was usable.")
Fifth Street Gateway
Built at the Putnam and Fifth streets entrance to the College in 1989 as part of the
extension of the Christy Mall to Putnam Street.
financial aid office
The formal name is Office of Student Financial Services.
Fine Arts Talent Scholarship
Capitalize when referring to Marietta College program. These are awarded to first-time
freshmen on the basis of a student's performance in a College-sponsored competition.
fireplace lounge
When using the formal name, Andrews Hall Fireplace Lounge, capitalize. On second
reference use fireplace lounge (no capitalization).
first annual
Use "inaugural" instead.
first-year student
Can be used instead of freshman to make a distinction between a sophomore who only
has enough credits to be considered a freshman.
fiscal year
Marietta's fiscal year runs from July 1 through June 30 and is named by closing date:
Fiscal year 2007 begins July 1, 2006, and ends June 30, 2007. Do not use the jargon
abbreviation "FY" for external audiences.
foreign words
Italicize those that are not common English expressions. Many previously foreign words
are now accepted as part of the English language and should not be italicized, such as
"alma mater" and "rendezvous."
forgo, forego
Forgo is the preferred spelling when meaning "to overlook or neglect" or "to do without
or give up."
Founders Day
Marietta College received its charter on Feb. 14, 1835. The College celebrates its birthday
on Feb. 14—or the Thursday before it—every year with a tribute called Founders Day.
Each year the College selects a guest speaker and presents faculty awards.
four day break
Do not capitalize. Refers to four days off (Saturday to Tuesday)
in fall semester.
Frisbee, Frisbee golf and Ultimate Frisbee
Capitalize the trademark name of a flying disk.
fractions
Spell out when used in text; use numerals in charts. For fractions and percentages, the
verb should agree with the noun following the "of." (Ex: "Three-fourths of the students
were Education majors. Three-fourths of the job is completed.")
Friedman Lecture Series
Annual lecture hosted the by the Department of Economics, Management
and Accounting. It was made possible through a trust established
by Lester E. and the late Alice McCoy Merydith, alumnus and alumna
of the College in the Classes of 1927 and 1928, respectively,
of Sun City, Ariz. The first lecture in 1983 featured the honoree,
Dr. Milton Friedman.
Friederich Theatre
Located in The Grover M. Hermann Fine Arts Center, it seats 200
and can be arranged to accommodate any type of staging now used
in the modern theater: proscenium, arena, caliper, open or thrust
stages. There are two side stages and an orchestra pit.

Fulbright Program
The two main categories for U.S. applicants/recipients of these awards for international
educational exchange are the Fulbright Student Program (for graduating seniors, young
professionals, artists, and graduate students) and the Fulbright Scholar Program (for
faculty and professionals).
Faculty and professional recipients are called Fulbright Scholars, a term that is often
erroneously used for students.
Recipients of the Student Program awards do not have a formal reference. Instead,
simply say the person is a Fulbright student, a Fulbright award-winner, was awarded a
Fulbright grant, or received a Fulbright award.
The programs are administered by the Institute of International Education.
