M (MacMillen House to Multimedia)
MacMillen House
Located at 213 Fourth St., is the home for the College's Physical Plant. The house was the
birthplace of Francis Rae MacMillen in 1855. A child prodigy, he achieved an
international reputation as a violinist.

Mallet Mania
Capitalize when referencing Marietta's program. Marietta College's marimba ensemble is
open to all students and performs a variety of musical styles arranged for these
percussion instruments. Instructor permission is required to enroll.
Marcolian, The
Italicize. It is a bi-weekly student newspaper. The organization provides hands-on
experience in newspaper production and operations. Membership is open to all
interested students.
Mariettana
Italicize. The Marietta College yearbook records the activities of the Marietta College community. Students assist with publication of the book, which is supplied to all students.
Mary Beach Hall
Residence hall for 97 first-year male students. It is connected to Dorothy Webster Hall.
Marietta College Forensics Team
Capitalize when referencing proper name, but don't capitalize
when referring to forensics team. The forensics team hosts the
Ruth A. Wilcox Forensics Tournament each fall and travels to other
competitions throughout the year.
Marietta Hall
Co-ed residence hall for 126 first-year students.
Marietta on the Mall
This gathering has occurred each year since 2006 during Homecoming
weekend. This get together includes a Navy Blue & White Music
Festival, entertainment, fun and food. Usually the parade occurs
about mid-way through the event.
master calendar
Do not capitalize when referring to Marietta College's master listing of events. The
proper name is Campus Calendar.
McCoy Hall
Co-ed residence hall completed in the fall of 2001 to accommodate 176 upper-class
students.
McCoy Memorial Gateway
Located at the corner of Fourth and Putnam streets, it is the entrance to the front of the
campus. Erected in 1962 as a memorial gift from the family of the late John H. McCoy, a
trustee of the College for 24 years.
McCoy Scholars
The John G. and Jeanne B. McCoy Scholarship Program was endowed in 1998 by John G.
'35 and Jeanne B. McCoy to promote and recognize outstanding academic ability and
achievement in an incoming freshman student. The award includes tuition, fees, room,
board, and a computer, and is renewable for four years.
McDonough Center for Leadership and Business
Use the full name on first reference. The center was endowed by a gift in memory of
Bernard P. McDonough, a local industrialist. Included in the building is the 300-seat
Alma McDonough Auditorium, Betty Cleland Room, and a small apartment.

The McDonough Center for Leadership and Business is named in
honor of Bernard P. McDonough (1903-85), a self-made industrialist
and entrepreneur who ran wide-ranging global business interests from
his Marmac Corporation headquarters in Parkersburg, W.Va. From
humble beginnings, he built an industrial empire after World War II
with diverse holdings, including concrete plants, construction
companies, shoe factories, marine barges, lawn and garden tool
factories, and sand and gravel operations.
In 1986, through a generous $5.5 million gift from McDonough's wife,
Alma McDonough, and the McDonough Foundation, Marietta College
established the Bernard P. McDonough Center for Leadership and
Business. The Center offered one of the first comprehensive
undergraduate leadership programs in the United States.
McKinney Media Center
Home to the media part of the Communication and Media Studies Department,
including the College's radio and television broadcast facilities and the student
newspaper offices. It is also referred to as the Mass Media Building.

Also known as Wood County Airport. It is located in nearby Parkersburg, W.Va., and
provides daily flights to Cleveland, Ohio.

break is more commonly used for the other.

All regions should be capitalized (the Southeast, the West).
Mills Hall
Home to the communication part of the Communication and Media Studies
Department. Renovated in 2005 with smart classrooms on the first and second floors.
On the roof is the William Chamberlain Gurley Observatory, which has an electrically
driven dome for a six-inch Byrne refractor telescope built in 1882, and an observation
platform.
Model United Nations
Can also be called Model U.N. on first reference. The club is a student organization
devoted to learning about international politics by preparing for and participating in
inter-collegiate simulations, where students role-play delegates from different countries
in committees of the United Nations. At the simulations, students try to pass resolutions
that address international problems in a way that favors the representative country's
interest.

Use numerals. Use a hyphen when forming a compound adjective. (Ex: Josh Smith gave
$50. Her gift was $1 million (simple nouns). Jane Doe presented a $1-million gift
(compound adjective). The year-end total was nearly $1.5 million.) The decimal system
(taken out 1,2 or 3 places) is usually preferred for numbers above $1 million. (Ex: $8.567
million, or better yet: more than $1.6 million, nearly $1.7 million)

Capitalize the names of months in all uses. When a month is used with a specific date
abbreviate only Jan., Feb., Aug., Sept., Oct., Nov., Dec.
more than, over
Not interchangeable. Do not use over unless you are referring to a spatial relationship.
(Ex: "Dan Bryant flew his plane over Columbus on his way to the Mid-Ohio Valley
Airport.") More than should be used when referring to figures and amounts. (Ex: "The
number of students taking Dr. Barnas' class rose to more than 200 after she earned the
award.")
