task force
Two words.
Tau Pi Phi
Honors outstanding students in majors in the Economics, Management, and Accounting
department. Requirements are 15 hours in courses taught in the EMA department with a
3.2 GPA, plus a 3.2 overall GPA. Members have the opportunity to participate in the
annual Tau Pi Phi case competition.
Teacher Education Association of Marietta (TEAM)
Spell out first reference. TEAM is dedicated to supporting the academic, professional,
and special interests of those involved in the education department at Marietta College.
telephone numbers
Use parentheses to separate area codes and a hyphen for prefixes: (740) 376-4802. Do
not use the numeral 1 before area codes, but use it for 800 numbers (1-800-555-1212).
that, which
That is used to introduce an essential clause (one that cannot be eliminated without
changing the meaning). Which is used to introduce a nonessential clause. (Ex: "She
signed up for the biology course that she needed to complete her degree. She took
biology, which is a course she needed to complete her major.") An essential clause must
not be set off from the rest of the sentence by commas; a nonessential clause must.
that, who
Use "that" when referring to inanimate objects and to animals without a name. (Ex: "He
works for the company that pioneered the AIDS vaccine. There goes the cat that
scratched me.") Use "who" when referring to people or to animals with a name. (Ex: "Dr.
Mary Barnas is the one who started the Center for Families and Children. It was Fluffy
who scratched me.")
theatre
This is Marietta College's style for all references (unless a proper name that is
spelled theater). Proper use on campus is Marietta College's theatre department.
Thomas Hall
Acceptable on first reference, but official name is Andrew U. Thomas Memorial Hall. It
houses the classrooms, reading rooms and offices of the Departments of English, History,
Modern Languages, Philosophy, Political Science, Religion and the Brachman
Department of Economics, Management and Accounting. The Honors Program suite,
Writing Center and International Student Office are in Thomas Hall.
Timblin Hall
Twin residence hall to Parsons Hall that was razed in the summer of 2003.
time
Do not use :00 (Example: 6 p.m.) Official invitations might opt for more formal use of
times, including "o'clock"; use noon and midnight rather than 12 p.m. and 12 a.m. to
avoid confusion.
titles
Titles before people's names are generally capitalized. (President George Bush, Gov. Bob
Taft, Trustee Patricia Willis, etc.) less formal titles that are strictly occupational
descriptions (coach, class agent, reporter, etc.) are not capitalized even when they
precede a name.
After a name: Capitalize titles that are used as descriptive phrases and set off by commas (“Lori Lewis, Vice President for Advancement, spoke to a group of alumni”).
Used in isolation: Without names attached, these words become generic nouns and
should not be capitalized. ("The director of alumni relations gave a speech.")
Subsequent reference/courtesy titles: Marietta College uses courtesy titles only on
professors who have earned a Ph.D. and they can be referred to "Dr." The College does
not use Mr., Ms., Miss or Mrs.
Invitations/special publications: short, formal blocks of copy may call for total disregard
of the above stated rules.
COMPOSITION TITLES
- Capitalize the principal words, including prepositions and conjunctions of four or
more letters, and capitalize articles and words of fewer than four letters if they are
the first or last word in the title.
- Italicize titles of newspapers, magazines, and books (excluding reference works and
the Bible), movies, TV programs, plays, epic poems, operas, albums, exhibit titles,
and individual works of art.
- Use quotation marks around the titles of articles, chapters, lectures, movements and
dance pieces.
OFFICIAL COURSE TITLES
- Capitalize a specific class, but do not italicize it. (Education 361: Diagnosis and
Correction off Reading Difficulties; Geology 101: Environmental Geology)
town and gown
Marietta's program is known as Institute for Learning in Retirement (ILR). Do not
capitalize when making a general reference to town and gown relations. MC's program
involves a number of both day and night courses open to the general public for a
nominal charge of $25. Enrollment is contingent upon space availability and instructor
approval.
Trailblazer
Alumni newsletter that debuted in May 2006. It is published twice a year as a bridge
between the alumni magazine.
Trustees Scholarship
Capitalize when referring to Marietta College's program that provides an award of $9,000
to $13,000 annually for up to four years of study at MC. To be eligible a student must
have at least a 3.75 grade point average and 1350 on the SAT or 30 on the ACT.
tutorships
Allow students to receive credit by helping other College students learn. |
