2006 Fine Arts Competition

audition in a College-sponsored competition.*
Talent Scholarships in the Fine Arts are awarded to first-time freshmen and select transfers on the basis of an audition in a College-sponsored competition. Recipients are selected on the strength of previous arts experience and education, references, and a final interview consisting of a live audition, a portfolio presentation, or both. Art finalists are chosen the first week of February and are invited to campus for the final competition. All other registered students will be invited to campus for a live audition. Multiple scholarships valued up to $3,500 are awarded annually in Art, Music, Theatre, and Musical Theatre.

Winners must enroll as full-time students in the fall of 2006. Scholarship recipients are required to maintain continuous full-time enrollment at Marietta, satisfactory progress toward a degree and to be recommended for renewal by the fine arts faculty. Renewal amounts are equal to the first year award if students meets all criteria.
Eligibility:
The Fine Arts Talent Scholarship is designed to encourage participation in the arts, and to reward students who will enrich the cultural environment at Marietta College.
Students need not to major in art, music, or theatre to compete. However, participation in respective areas is a requirement. In addition, a minor in art is a requirement if an award is made in this area.
To participate, a completed application for admission to Marietta College must be submitted by February 1, 2006. You may complete an admission application on-line at admission.marietta.edu.
Only students who are accepted to the college can be awarded talent scholarships.

Art Guidelines:
The steps you need to follow are listed below:
Step 1: Portfolio-Create four drawings of the following using only pencil or charcoal:
Self-Portrait (using a mirror, not a photo)
Vehicle
Interior
Landscape
Each must be a minimum of 11"x 14" in size. Label all work.
Also submit at least 10 additional pieces of artwork (drawings, paintings, photography, designs, and/or 3 dimensional work). These may be submitted as original pieces, 35mm slides, or digital slides on a CD. Label all work.
Step 2: Submit Portfolio to Art Department- Mail your portfolio to the Art Department by March 1, 2006. The are department faculty will review all portfolios and determine the final candidates for the talent competition. Please include a return address so your portfolio can be mailed back to you upon review.
Step 3: Drawing Session and Interview-Final candidates will be invited to campus to compete an on-site drawing session and portfolio review with the art department faculty. The session will take place Friday, March 31, 2006. Candidates will be notified of scholarship awards by mid-April.

Music Guidelines:
The steps you need to follow are listed below:
Step 1: Submit Materials to Music Department- Submit a resume of musical and theatre experiences. A reference from a teacher or director is optional.
Step 2: Prepare Audition- Prepare an addition consisting of the following items based upon the area in which you wish to compete.
Music-Instrumental: Prepare an audition consisting of 2-3 instrumental pieces in contrasting styles.
Music-Vocal: Prepare an audition consisting of 2-3 art songs or arias in contrasting styles. Candidates wishing to perform musical theatre selections should audition under the musical theatre guidelines.
Step 3: Auditions and Interview- All candidates for awards in music should audition and interview in person on one of the competition dates outlined*. Following the live auditions, our faulty will reconvene to determine awards. Candidates will be notified of the awards soon after their audition.

Step 2: Prepare an Audition- Prepare an audition consisting of the following items based upon the area in which you wish to compete.
Theatre-Acting: Prepare a 4-6 minute audition consisting of a 2 minute serious selection, and a 2 minute comic selection. You may also perform a song from musical theatre.
Theatre-Technical: Submit a resume of technical accomplishments and one of the following:
1. A design or technical portfolio of sets, lights, or costume work.
2. A stage manager's production book.
Musical Theatre: Prepare a 4-6 minute audition consisting of a 2 minute serious section, a 2 minute comic section, and 2 contrasting songs from musical theatre.
Additional requirements: Submit a resume of theatre experiences and a reference from a teacher or director.
Step 3: Auditions and Interview-All candidates for awards in theatre should audition and interview in person on one of the competition dates outlined*. Following the live auditions, our faculty will reconvene to determine awards. Candidates will be notified of awards soon after their auditions.
