Faculty: Todd Roeth
I am a graphic designer. I define graphic design as a service that simplifies ideas and communicates their messages; by which it’s process adds and elevates a culture’s collective discourse.
I use the tools of the trade in my academic and professional life. In both I use photographs, illustrations, colors, composition, type, motion, and tempo to express my personal ideas and to communicate messages of others. Most importantly, I rely on the written word as the strongest vehicle for both self-expression and commercial projects. Words – and the ideas they carry are the most effective and un-ambiguous way to share and spread ideas.
Meaning is mandatory for effective work. Words are often the most overlooked, or undervalued asset a visual artist has when creating their work. As such, I have a strong interest in typography, which can further the effect of the written word. Much of my work and my influences use words to drive their intentions.
I have worked in several capacities as a graphic designer, photographer, and an illustrator. My experiences have taught me the value of a liberally educated mind – a mind that has the interest and desire to learn about all avenues of life. I have yet to find a discipline or experience in life that – when better understood – has not added to my ability as a graphic designer. In short, I believe the biggest and most lasting asset a graphic design student can have, is to be a constant student of culture. To be aware of the social, political, environmental, and economical landscape that one lives in is the best way to better communicate within it; be it for personal, commercial, or civic reasons.
