The Buckeye

Junonia coenia Hubner 1822

Color:
The body and wings of the Buckeye are brown. The two upper wings have a white band, near the tips, and orange and blue markings located medially. There are distinctive large spots on all four wings: the two upper wings have a dark black spot with a blue dot in the center, and the two lower wings have two large purple and blue spots (resembling eyes). Note that, for contrast, all of the spots are lined by a light band of coloration. The edges of all four wings have a yellow and brown stripe located laterally (Klots, 1979, 109).

Size:
The Buckeye is 2.2-2.5 inches in width (Klots, 1979, 109), and 2.5-2.8 inches in height.

Food:
The caterpillar feeds on Plantain, Gerardia, Snapdragon, and Stonecrop (Klots, 1979, 109).

Geographic Range:
The Buckeye ranges from southern Canada to tropical America (Klots, 1979, 109).
