The Mourning Cloak


Nymphalis antiopa Linnaeus

Color:
The body of N. antiopa is dark brown. All four wings are dark brown with bands of yellow (or white) located at the edges of each. Additionally, there are distinctive blue spots running down the length of all four wings laterally (inward from yellow bands) (Klots, 1979, 106).

Size:
The Mourning Cloak is 2.75-3.25 inches in width (Klots, 1979, 106), and 2. 75-3.23 inches in height.

Food:
The caterpillar feeds on Elm, Willow, Poplar, and Roses (Klots, 1979, 106).

Geographic Range:
The Mourning Cloak can be found all throughout the eastern and western United States, and into southern Canada (Klots, 1979, 106).
