The Question Mark


Polygonia interrogationis Fabricius

Color:
The body of the Question Mark is a brown-green color. All four wings are a brown-orange color. Additionally, all four wings have a row of light orange spots down the length of each. The two upper wings have dark brown spots located in the center of each. The ventral side, being mostly gray and brown, has a distinctive question mark shaped marking on the lower wings (Klots, 1979, 102).

Size:
The Question Mark is 2.4-2.6 inches in width (Klots, 1979, 102), and 2.5-2.9 inches in height.

Food:
The caterpillar feeds on Elm, Nettle, Basswood, and Hops (Klots, 1979, 103).

Geographic Range:
The butterfly ranges from the Maritime Provinces, Quebec, and Ontario, south throughout the eastern United States and into Mexico (Klots, 1979, 103).
