Hello, my name is Tom Moreno. I am a recent graduate of Marietta College, class of 1996. During my last summer in Marietta, I decided to catalog all of the butterfly species found in Washington County, Ohio (located in southeastern Ohio). The purpose of this project was to identify the various species located in Washington County, Ohio. This area affords a great deal of habitat diversity. Over the summer of 1995, I identified 42 different butterfly species (24 of the most common species  are listed here). Overall, my study provides the amateur butterfly collector a description of some of the more common butterflies found in the eastern half of the United States. I have provided descriptions of butterfly color, size, food, and geographic range for all listed species. For more information on the butterflies listed, refer to the Peterson Field Guide, Eastern Butterflies.

Update - Summer, 1997.  The Biology Department has decided to update and expand on Tom's work.  In particular, we have updated the species list with the help of John V. Calhoun, one of the authors of Butterflies and Skippers of Ohio, and we are adding to the species list data from that book and from other naturalists around the county.
