Barbara Beiser Voorhees
was a 1949 graduate of
Marietta
College. She graduated Phi Beta Kappa with a BA in Business. Barbara was
born in
Marietta
and graduated from Marietta
High School. Her father, John Beiser, was a circulation manager at The Marietta
Times and a local golf pro. Her grandfather, Dr. John A. Beiser, was a
dentist in
Marietta
-- his office was located at
254 Front Street
from 1901 until his death in 1962.
Barbara died on August 2, 2005 in
Highland Park,
New Jersey. Barbara
is survived by her husband Ralph, four children, 15 grandchildren, and
her brother John. Ralph is a retired
stockbroker and graduated from
Rutgers
University
in 1948 and received his MBA from NYU in 1950. The field station property was in the Beiser
family for many years and was last farmed before the Great Depression,
although portions have been logged since.

The Barbara A. Beiser Field Station has a remarkable
history, with at least 3 distinct faces. Of course, there is
the natural history of a site which has several unique qualities to
it - the river, a steep slope, springs and seeps, rock outcroppings,
and a variety of successional stages. Then there is the human
history, from the earliest inhabitants to the European pioneers who
began to farm the area in the early 1800's and on to the Beiser
family stewardship lasting over 100 years. Finally, there is
the history of the land as a field station. Each is a unique
story, and one we hope to develop more fully on these pages over the
years.
Above: A near-infrared view of students
returning from a zoology class trip to the field station. The
near infrared camera blocks visible light and only allows infrared
light to reach the camera's sensor. The colors recorded are
arbitrary and can be reassigned. For instance, in this picture
the sky was a deep red. Vegetation usually reflects a lot of
near infrared and thus appears particularly bright in the
image. A conventional color image of the same type of scene is
shown below.
Aerial view of the field
station. SR 26 runs east-west just out of the top of the frame;
the Ohio River similarly runs southwest below the frame. The red
squares approximate the property boundaries.
