Posterior Adductor Muscle

The posterior muscles allow the mussel to open and or close its shell.  When the posterior muscles are relaxed, they allow the two shells to open.  When the posterior muscles are contracted, they closes the shell, making it hard for predators to open the shell and eat the mussel.
