This summer the Biology Department is sponsoring a special summer experience. Five of us - 3 faculty, 1 recent graduate, and 1 undergraduate student, have been on the road for a week. The main purpose of our trip is to attend the North American Benthological Society meeting being held at the University of Prince Edward Island on Prince Edward Island in Canada.
We've had a fun trip so far - exploring the seashore on Cape Cod with Dr. Tschunko's former botany professor Dr. Norton Nickerson; traveling through Acadia National Park in Maine, seeing Woods Hole and the various research institutions there; taking a harbor tour in Castine Maine, courtesy of the Maine Maritime Academy, and exploring the boreal forests and bogs at several sites in New England.
Perhaps the highlight of our trip so far has been an excursion to Machias Seal Island where we were surrounded by puffins, razorbill auks, arctic terns, and a number of other bird species. We thought we'd share a few pictures with you now; more and better pictures to come this summer.
The lighthouse on Machias Seal Island; note that the image has several
blurred birds (terns and puffins) that were flying through.

and other birds.

That's all for now. This page was filed from the University of Prince Edward Island on June 4, 1998. Greetings from Almuth, Tanya, Candace, Sarah and Dave to the folks at Marietta. On to Baxter State Park!
