Course Description and Learning Objectives


This performance-based course is the second part of a year-long study of Chinese at the intermediate level. It will continue to emphasize the basic training in the four language skills of listening, speaking, reading, and writing for communication in real-life situations. Increased emphasis will be given to grammar, vocabulary-building, conversation, and character recognition. Cultural aspects will also be introduced and discussed in class to increase students' cross-cultural sensitivity.

  • Grammar: Basic sentence structures for conversation and reading
  • Conversation & listening comprehension: Conversation with a librarian, asking directions, attending a party, seeing a doctor, etc.
  • Reading: Short passages written in simplified and traditional characters
  • Character writing: Simplified characters
