Programs of Study
The rapid growth of computing technologies has increased the demand
for properly educated specialists in computer science and computer information
systems. Marietta College has programs in these areas which are designed
to capitalize upon the unique features of a small college environment.
There are several reasons to consider Marietta College for an education
in computer-related subjects:
- Marietta is a small, private college. Classes are small, and faculty
members pride themselves on the individual attention they give students.
- The full-time computer
science faculty at Marietta are highly qualified. Each member
of the department has a graduate degree in a computer-related area.
- Computer science faculty are very involved in professional development
and service to the computing community. Faculty and students often engage
in consulting projects which serve area business and industry. In a
departmental capstone course, students develop automated information
systems for real users. Such projects keep faculty and students in touch
with the newest hardware and software development environments.
- Faculty in departments other than computer science actively involve
their students in computer related projects. These departments include
accounting, art, biology, chemistry, economics, industrial engineering,
environmental science, geology, management, mathematics, petroleum engineering,
mass media, physics, political sceince and psychology
- Students may obtain a major or a minor in either
computer science
or computer information systems.
- The department also offers a certificate as a microcomputer
systems specialist.
- Marietta College has well-equipped micro-computer-based laboratories,
including a computerized classroom, which are networked to provide access
to many modern software tools, other hardware platforms on campus and
external resources available through the Internet.
