Student Activities

Computer science majors at Marietta are involved in a number of activities on campus. One of the most important is the active Marietta College student chapter of the ACM (Association for Computing Machinery). This organization sponsors regular speakers, social activities, and other forums for discussion of computer-related issues.

One of the chapter highlights is a programming contest, in which student teams from Marietta and other colleges compete in writing accurate software in the shortest time. Marietta sponsors a local contest, and participates in the regional and (hopefully) national contests.

Student Employment/Internships

Students are used as system managers, operators, consultants and programmers on both academic and administrative computer systems. This provides valuable mind-power to the college, as well as meaningful work experience and financial aid to computer science students at Marietta.

Area employers frequently seek current students to assist in the design, development, or maintenance of their information systems. A number of students are utilized by Marietta College's Institute of Education and Training for Business as assistants in their computer seminars or as part of a consulting team.

Students may also take advantage of intership experiences during the year on campus or with local businesses, or during the summer with a number of regional or national firms.

Employment of Graduates

Marietta graduates have had a great deal of success in securing employment in the computer industry. All graduates have been able to find positions, although those with lower grade point averages have had to look a little harder.

Graduates have found jobs with computer companies (IBM, DEC, NCR, UniSys,), chemical companies (Borg-Warner, DuPont, Chemical Abstracts), manufacturing companies (General Motors, Connex), data processing organizations (EDS, GTE Data Systems), financial institutions, and educational institutions. A number of students work for consulting firms or have formed their own companies.

Credit for Advanced Placement Test

The advanced placement test in computer science was offered by the College Entrance Examination Board to graduating high school seniors for the first time in May of 1984. It now assumes C as the programming language to express solutions to problems. Marietta College grants advanced placement credit to incoming freshmen who perform satisfactorily on this test.
