Continuing Education: Curriculum Application
Formal application is not required of Continuing Education students
until after they have completed 12 hours at Marietta College. However,
any Continuing Education students who wish to apply for financial aid,
must follow the regular admission procedures described in this
Catalog. Continuing Education courses are open to any person with a
High School diploma or its equivalent.
Transfer of Credit
Marietta College welcomes students transferring course work from other
colleges and universities. Most Continuing Education students, in
fact, include some transfer work as part of their degree program. Any
transferring student should be aware that a minimum of 30 of the last
37 hours of course work must be completed at Marietta College in order
to receive a bachelor's degree, and 15 of the last 18 hours of credit
used in fulfillment of the requirements for the associate degree must
be completed at Marietta College. Prospective students are invited to
make an appointment to discuss questions about the Continuing
Education Program. Students who are reentering college may find it
useful to have a review and evaluation of their previous course work.
This may be done as part of the preregistration interview process
prior to each semester.
Fees
Tuition for Continuing Education courses at the undergraduate level
is $185 per credit hour. Tuition for graduate courses is $260 per
credit hour. The fee for auditing a course is $40 per credit hour.
Evening and Weekend Courses
Courses are usually offered Monday through Thursday evenings and on
weekends.
A list of course offerings is available upon request from Continuing Education/Records. Currently enrolled students and those making personal or telephone inquiries will receive the list of courses by mail.
Summer Session
No formal application is necessary to take summer session courses at
Marietta College. Students in good standing at any college or
university or persons who wish to pursue course work on a part-time
basis may enroll. Any high school graduate or high school student who
has completed the junior year is eligible to enroll in summer session
courses. Attendance at summer sessions does not constitute formal
acceptance to Marietta College.
The summer session usually begins in mid-May and ends in late July. Courses are offered in an early four-week session, a late six-week session, and an extended 10-week session. A student may enroll in a maximum of two courses in either the six-week or the extended 10-week session. Permission to enroll in more than one course in the four-week session or 11 credit hours for the entire summer must be obtained from the Director of Continuing Education.
Non-traditional Study
The Non-traditional Study program at Marietta provides an alternative
and supplement to the regular schedule of evening and weekend courses.
Courses listed in the catalog that are not otherwise conveniently
available to Continuing Education students may frequently be taken on
a Non-traditional Study basis. In most cases the delivery system, not
the course content, is all that is changed. Individually designed
independent study projects are also available. In each case, a
learning contract is prepared by the student and instructor, which
defines the timeframe for the course of study, reading assignments,
degree of contact between the instructor and student, other
expectations and methods of evaluation. Non-traditional Study is not
a correspondence course program. In most cases the faculty instructor
meets with the student on a regular basis to discuss assignments and
monitor the student's progress.
Credit by Examination
Credit by examination may be obtained through Continuing Education.
Assessment of Prior Learning
A student may earn College credit for professional work outside the
conventional college classroom environment. Credit is awarded through
a process of portfolio assessment provided by Marietta College and the
East Central Colleges. Credit earned by this process is considered
resident credit. A two-credit course, College 115, Introduction to
Portfolio Preparation, is available to assist interested students in
beginning their portfolios, but this course is not required for
portfolio submission.
A portfolio is prepared by first examining catalogs of the consortium colleges for courses that the student believes can be fulfilled by documented life experience; the student then writes an extended justification for each course. The basic fee for portfolio review is approximately $675. Portfolio preparation is recommended only if the student is requesting at least 20 credit hours.
College 115. Introduction to Portfolio Preparation.
Examines process by which a portfolio for life experience credit is
prepared. Includes preparation of vita and autobiography and
self-assessment of potential areas of credit for life experience.
Credit: 2 Hours
College 116. Portfolio.

Prerequisite: College 115.
Credit: 1 Hour
Continuing Education Honors
College Scholar
A Continuing Education student, upon completion of the first 30
undergraduate semester hours in residence toward a degree program
(associate or bachelor's) at Marietta College, with a cumulative
grade point average of 3.500 or higher, qualifies as a College
Scholar, Continuing Education.
Alpha Sigma Lambda
Marietta College is the site of the Zeta Gamma chapter of Alpha
Sigma Lambda, a national honorary for nontraditional students.
Criteria for membership are: 30 hours at Marietta College, 15 of
which should be outside the major department, placement in the top
10 percent of one's class, and a GPA of 3.200 or greater.
Course Load
The normal academic load for Continuing Education students is two
courses per semester. Special permission must be obtained through
the office of Continuing Education/Records to register for more than
two courses.
Auditing
Regular academic courses generally carry three College credits. Any
student, however, may elect to "audit" a course; that is, to take a
course on a noncredit basis. If a student chooses to "audit" a course,
he or she is not required to take any of its examinations or meet any
of its other academic obligations, and no grade is awarded. The fee
for a Continuing Education student "auditing" a course is $40 per
semester hour.
Town and Gown
A number of both day and evening courses are open to the general
public for the nominal charge of $25. Students enrolled under the
Town and Gown program do not take examinations or meet any of the
other academic obligations of the course. No grade is awarded, and
no record is kept of the enrollment. Enrollment is contingent upon
space available in the course and approval of the instructor.
Certificate Programs
The Accounting Certificate is taken by people who already have a
degree in another field but would like to develop a documented
proficiency in accounting. This certificate, however, may be pursued
concurrently with any degree program. The series of courses in the
accounting certificate provides a foundation for entry-level
employment in the accounting field. Coupled with an undergraduate
degree in any field, this course of study meets current CPA
examination entry requirements in both Ohio and West Virginia.
The Certificate for Microcomputer Systems Specialist is a combination of courses in management and computer science which is designed to develop skills in managing information with microcomputers. The program was established for Continuing Education students, but regular day students may enroll in the courses of the certificate program on a space-available basis. Students most likely to pursue this program are those from business or industry that desire to develop a local microcomputer expert and those individuals who want to have marketable and current skills in the area of microcomputers.
Teacher's Certificates. Marietta College is accredited by the State of Ohio Department of Education. Students satisfactorily completing the required courses will, subject to the approval of the State of Ohio and Marietta College's Education Department, be eligible for provisional certificates in elementary and secondary education. Ohio certificates are reciprocal with those of 26 other states. Many courses for certification are available through the Continuing Education Program.
Degree Completion Program for Nurses
Any registered nurse who has completed either a two- or three-year
accredited nursing program, passed the examination for registry, and
completed not less than three years of work experience in the nursing
profession, will be awarded 60 semester hours of credit toward any
bachelor's degree program of study.
Bachelor's Degree Majors
A Continuing Education student may declare a major in any one of the
official majors offered by Marietta College that are listed elsewhere
in the Catalog. The majors most commonly chosen by Continuing
Education students are management, marketing, human resource
management, accounting, elementary education, and psychology.
Graduation Requirements for the Bachelor's Degree
The requirements for the bachelor's degree awarded through the
Continuing Education Program are the same as those listed in the
Graduation Requirements section of the Catalog, especially the
section All Students Earning a Bachelor Degree Program.
College Experience Seminar
A special section of College Experience Seminar (CESE) is offered for
Continuing Education students. This course attempts to develop skills
and knowledge that will help students be successful in acquiring a
degree and engaging in lifelong learning. Part of lifelong learning
is the application of good speaking and writing skills to material
in a variety of academic disciplines. Special attention is given to
the improvement of skills such as note taking, textbook reading, and
test taking. Students are taught ways of making informed decisions
about academic programs and careers. This course is required of all
Continuing Education students entering with fewer than 25 semester
hours.
CESE 101
Introduction to higher education at Marietta College including study
skills, career exploration, development of critical thinking, and
communication skills. Several readings, a paper, and some public
speaking required. (Course tailored to adult students.)
Credit: 3 hours.
Major In General Studies
An additional option that is open only to Continuing Education
students is the general studies major. The requirements for this
major are 24 credit hours in one department (economics, management,
and accounting are considered one department for this purpose), and
24 credit hours in two other departments. The second set of 24 hours
must have at least nine hours from each department. A 2.000 grade
point average is required in all 48 hours.
Associate Degree Programs
Associate of Arts Programs
Marietta College offers two Associate of Arts degree programs: the
Associate of Arts degree in Business Administration and the Associate
of Arts degree in Liberal Arts. Each program requires 61 credit hours
of course work. All courses taken for the Associate of Arts degree are
applicable toward the Bachelor of Arts degree. Specific details of
degree requirements are available from Continuing Education/Records.
Associate of Arts degrees may be earned only by Continuing Education students. They are designed to incorporate essentially half the requirements of the bachelor's degree.
At least 30 of the credits for either of the Associate of Arts programs must be taken at Marietta College (either Continuing Education or day), and 15 of the last 18 hours of credit used in fulfillment of the requirements for the associate degree must be completed at Marietta College. The final 15 credits must be taken through Continuing Education.
