Upon acceptance into the Program, each candidate will open a portfolio. This portfolio consists of an ungraded copy of a written assignment submitted for each course in the program, official transcripts of all college work, a degree plan audit sheet, and admission materials. The candidate selects the written assignments to be placed in the portfolio. Three specific rules apply to all portfolio submissions: 1) if the submission is a paper, it must be a minimum of 5 pages in length, 2) if the submission is a project or problem, it must demonstrate an application of skill or technique that is normally associated with the course, and 3) the instructor for the course must agree to the candidate's selection and indicate this agreement by signing the paper. In a case where the instructor does not sign the paper, reasons why it was not signed must be given. The Chair of the Education department will decide the merits of unsigned pieces.
The portfolio requirement is designed to allow the degree candidate to demonstrate the growing ability to discern and analyze problems faced by the professional educator leader. Particular emphasis is placed upon growth in the candidate's writing and critical thinking skills.
Upon completion of 15 hours of coursework toward the degree, the portfolio is reviewed by two faculty members. Upon this initial review, the candidate's progress towards the degree is discussed. At this point, faculty will indicate the stats of the portfolio using one of the following options:
Target (3) - The portfolio demonstrates exemplary abilities in the areas of writing and critical thinking and reflects exceptional proficiency in program outcomes. A rating of 1 entitles the candidate to continue work towards the degree.
Acceptable (2) - The portfolio demonstrates an acceptable level of writing and critical thinking and a growing level of proficiency in program outcomes. Faculty reviewers provide feedback to enhance future portfolio submissions. A rating of 2 entitles the candidate to continue work towards the degree.
Unacceptable (1) - The portfolio does not demonstrate an acceptable level of writing and critical thinking and a growing level of proficiency in program outcomes. The candidate is given a remediation plan to address deficiencies found in the review. This plan may include suggestions for work with the Marietta College Writing Center. It is the candidate's responsibility to complete the remediation plan and resubmit work for faculty review before submitting the portfolio for a final review.
Academic probation and dismissal for M.A.Ed. candidates is determined on an individual basis by the Academic Standards Committee. Normally, M.A.Ed. candidates will be placed on academic probation if the cumulative grade point average falls below the 3.0 required for the degree. Once on probation, a candidate will have 6 semester hours to raise the cumulative G.P.A. to a 3.0.

No more than 6 hours may be accepted toward the Master of Arts in education degree. The petitioner must also meet all requirements for admission to the M.A.Ed. program.
The following general rules apply to those students desiring to change degree programs or transfer credit.
All hours transferred to the M.A.Ed. program must be consistent and fit the candidate's degree plan
