Using the World Wide Web and the links provided on the "RESOURCES" page of this website you will complete four tasks for your project of the Underground Railroad. You will work individually on the first three tasks. Then, after you have completed the first three tasks, you and your assigned group will work together to complete the fourth task. Your tasks are as listed below:

TASK 1: What is the Underground Railroad?

  • Explain what is meant by the term "Underground Railroad."
  • Identify three to five code words, or terms, used by passengers on the Underground Railroad and explain what each term means.
  • Draw a map depicting one route used on the Underground Railroad.

TASK 2: Major Contributors to the Underground Railroad

Harriet Tubman, Frederick Douglass and Thomas Garrett are just three examples of people who played large roles in the Underground Railroad.

  • Identify one person you believe to be a major contributor to the Underground Railroad. Then write a 2-3 page research paper about this person. Your paper should include a brief biography, an explanation of his/her role in the Underground Railroad, and why you believe this person's role to be important to the Underground Railroad. Remember to include a works cited page!

TASK 3:  The Role of the Underground Railroad

  • Based on the research you have completed, create a timeline depicting major events of the Underground Railroad.
  • On the back of your timeline, include a brief description of the role that the Underground Railroad has played in American history.

TASK 4:  Traveling the Underground Railroad
