The EMA Department's internship program is designed to enrich the educational experience of students by placing them into a business environment. This environment provides practical experience in the student's field of interest along with an opportunity to observe and apply concepts learned in the classroom.
Academic credit may be earned through meeting all four of
these requirements:
Generally students with summer internships will be assigned a grade of incomplete at the end of the summer. Papers and oral presentations for summer interns will be processed early in the Fall semester and S/U grades will be assigned upon completion of all requirements (generally by mid-term).
Students are encouraged to find their own internships. Help in locating internships and preparing resumes is available in the Career Development office on the top floor of Gilman. Occasionally the Career Development office receives requests for student interns, but the number of internships are limited and are generally in the local area. Students who want to be considered for these internships should submit resumes to both the EMA Department’s internship director and the Career Development center.
You may also want to check the Doors of Opportunity for information on available internships.
Students who find their own internships must submit brief descriptions of their proposed internships. These descriptions should include the names, addresses, and telephone numbers of immediate supervisors, along with a description of job responsibilities. Internships must be pre-approved by the EMA Department's internship director.
Students may register for up to nine credit hours of internship credit, but a single internship cannot exceed three credit hours. The nine credit hour limit also includes independent studies and tutoring. Registration is handled through the Office of Records and Registration in the same way any other course registration is handled, except that the course may be added at any time throughout the semester or summer. A “learning contract” is required for internship registration and must be signed by the internship director and the EMA Department Chair. All normal tuition fees apply to internship credit.
Accounting and HRM majors may count internships as capstone courses. See the college catalog for capstone requirements. The course number must be shown as 497 to count as a capstone course. Capstone courses may only be taken by seniors. Leadership students may count the same internship for EMA credit and the leadership program’s internship requirement.
Students may not register for internship credit retroactively. Registration must be at or near the beginning of the internship. The internship director will communicate learning goals and evaluation requirements to employers. It is important that this communication take place early in each internship.
