The Marcus and Mindel Vershok Brachman Department of Economics, Management and Accounting is home to the new Management Information Systems major. The goal of the major is to develop in students strong analytical, conceptual and hands-on skills in business and management information systems. These students will be comfortable functioning in both sides of an organization: they will understand rapidly developing hardware and software issues and also possess the business and managerial sense to plan, develop, and implement strategic information systems effectively. The new major reflects the department's mission of providing pre-professional programs that equip students for meaningful careers and lifelong learning.
The Management Information Systems (MIS) major is an inter-disciplinary program of study that bridges the worlds of busi-ness and computer systems. The major provides students with the educational background to understand how organizations rely on information systems to support their day-to-day activit-ies and long-term strategies. Students completing the program will have the technical ability to plan for, design, develop, and implement medium- to large-scale information systems in organizations. Additionally, students will have acquired the intellectual skills to survive in a rapidly-changing business environment. The major integrates four essential ingredients crucial for a successful MIS career. These are an understanding of (a) general business and management, in-cluding strategic thinking about the consistency of technology and business goals, (b) written and oral communication, (c) software and programming, and (d) hardware and networking.

The department lays great stress on internships as a way of students putting their knowledge to work. As with all the department's majors, the department's director of internships will assist MIS majors in securing internship positions. Students who excel academically will be invited to join Tau Pi Phi, a national business honorary. Careers in Management Information Systems. According to data from the University of Texas at Austin, salaries for MIS students graduating in 2003 ranged from $39,500 to $60,000, with an average salary around $46,500. The pamphlet "Choosing a Major," published by the Marietta College Career Center, reports that the MIS major ranks eighth in the top ten undergraduate majors most in demand. The structure of the major was influenced by the recommendations of the Association for Information Systems. According to the association "IS professionals must have a broad business and real world perspective, strong analytic and critical thinking skills, interpersonal communication and team skills, strong ethical principles, and must design and implement information technology solutions that enhance organization performance." |
