Note from the Director

As humanity enters the 21st century of the current era, it is becoming ever more evident that acting simply as consumers of products of the natural environment is no longer a viable option for our species . We humans are not something that is outside of the environment; we live in and are part of the environment. Learning to responsibly manage the environment, indeed being good stewards of the environment, is no longer an option but a necessity. Here in Ohio, in our recent history, we have been confronted with dramatic examples of the consequences of failed stewardship: the near collapse of the biological systems of Lake Erie, the pollution to the point of fire hazard of the Cuyahoga River, and other impacts of the uncontrolled industrialization of our state. Recent history also gives us cause for hope. Through the use of science , we came to understand the problems with which we were confronted and through the use of social and technological devices we remedied many of our problems and restored much of what existed before. That is the role of the environmental scientists in our society: to use our best science, indeed to use knowledge and skills gained from a wide array of sources, and apply that knowledge to problems that arise in the environment. Here at Marietta College, it is our intention to educate and help form the environmental professionals of tomorrow: the leaders who will skillfully work with all sectors of our society to develop and implement solutions.
