This page provides you with an overview of the semester
research project requirements.
Each student will select a specific topic of interest and
research it, using the FASB Accounting Standards Codification, SFASs,
and other sources of authoritative literature, for presentation at the
end of the semester.
You should begin with an introduction to the accounting
problem or question.
Then describe why this is an issue; do a literature
search and present a summary of the issues reported on in the
articles you found during your literature search.
Explain the proper accounting for the transaction(s),
using citations from the FASB Accounting Standards Codification,
FASB and EITF Web sites, or SEC Staff Accounting Bulletin Web site.
Comment on the GAAP treatment of the transaction, using
professional skepticism and a critical attitude. What trade-offs
have been made, considering the FASB Conceptual Framework
elements?
Summarize and conclude your presentation.
The research project will be presented orally (15 minutes,
including Q&A time), using PowerPoint to provide visual support to
the presentation.
You should submit to me your works cited list (with a minimum of
15 references, half of which must be from print resources) and a copy of
the PowerPoint presentation (please send these to me via e-mail
attachments).
You are strongly encouraged to sign up with the
Campus Writing Center
for module appointments throughout the semester-long project.
